BP Annual Player Comments

YearComment
2010 Years removed from his Metrodome heyday, Juan Rincon couldn’t stick with the Tigers or Rockies, and won’t stick anywhere until he stops handing out free passes.
2009 For the fourth straight season, Juan Rincon's run average and WHIP rose; the Twins cast him off mid-year, and Cleveland desperately snapped him up. He didn't pitch appreciably better for the Tribe, and it looks like he might be finished.
2008 The steady degradation in Rincon's peripherals-you can ski down those Stuff scores-finally showed up in his ERA last season. Gardenhire banished Rincon to the depths of the pen in July, after which the righty went six weeks without getting so much as a hold opportunity. There's been no whiff of a health problem; in fact, Rincon pitched winter ball to, as he put it, "eat up some innings" following his lowest workload in five years. It'd be more encouraging if he was hurt; now, he just looks like a pitcher on his way out of the league.
2007 He wasn`t as good as he was in 2005, when he wasn`t as good as he was in 2004, but all in all, he was still pretty good. There are few things more volatile in this world than non-closing relievers, and even closers aren`t exactly all that stable. Despite that, Rincon put up his third straight year with a sub-3.00 ERA, but every trend that matters is going in the wrong direction.
2006 Rincon earned a Performance Enhancing Drug (PED) suspension in May, giving him uncharacteristic notoriety. Pretty quietly, Rincon has become one of the best relievers in baseball. In the Twins` structured pen, he`s the dedicated setup man who bridges the 8th inning gap between Crain`s cleaning up the starter`s mess and Nathan`s 9th inning coup de grace. Off-season surgery to remove a bone spur in his elbow isn`t supposed to affect him in the spring, so expect more of the same.
2005 Don't get us wrong, a good closer isn't a bad thing to have, but it really helps to have one of the best setup men in baseball. Nathan ranked sixth in the AL in BP's Adjusted Runs Prevented, a measure of relief performance; Rincon finished seventh. Only the Yankees' combo of Mariano Rivera and Tom Gordon could match that, but you've probably already heard about them. PECOTA's a bit down on Rincon because the track record of short right-handers isn't replete with success stories, but he's durable enough to join the ranks of the game's best setup men.
2003 This might be the best time in the last 30 years for the under-six foot right-handed starter to make it in major league baseball. Rincon deals moving heat in the low 90s and throws four pitches for strikes, but at 5˘11=, there are a lot of people in the game who couldn’t care less. He’s another candidate for the fifth starter’s job, but with Bob Wells and Mike Jackson gone, he could slip into the pen and become another homegrown success story.
2002 Rincon is a three-pitch starter who's been pretty effective and has a chance to be a major-league starter. Scouts think he can add a couple of mph to his fastball by fine-tuning his mechanics. He'll start the year at Triple-A, and if there's another string of injuries to the #4 and #5 guys, he'll get a crack at the rotation late in 2002.
2001 Another Twins’ pitcher under six feet tall who can throw hard, Juan Rincon pumps gas into the mid 90s and has a good slider. He’s butting heads with the organization because he has ideas of his own about how to throw a change-up, and they haven’t worked. He also had the misfortune of getting called up in time to participate in New Britain’s godawful season, and he pitched a lot of innings in winter ball. He’s very young and already at risk.
2000 Made big strides in his second year in the Midwest League: a 2.92 ERA and 153 strikeouts in 163 innings. He’d already been an All-Star in the league in 1998. Signed as a free agent out of Venezuela, Rincon should start appearing on prospect lists now that Pedro Martinez has given right-handed pitchers under six feet tall a good name.
