BP Annual Player Comments

YearComment
2003 Van Hekken was recalled in September after spending most of the year in Erie and then posting a 5–0 record in seven Triple-A starts. He throws a below-average fastball that sinks and moves around effectively. His curve is sharp, but he doesn’t always have command of it. After throwing a shutout in his major league debut, he was increasingly less effective as he faced more hitters. The Tigers piled a career-high 213.1 innings through three levels on his arm last year, and his velocity was down to the mid-80s or below at the end of the season. He should be able to make the changes he needs to be effective as he gains more experience in Triple-A and/or the majors, assuming no arm problems. That’s a big assumption after a yearlong run at the Terry Francona School of Pitching Instruction.
2002 The Tigers would love to see Van Hekken succeed, both because he’s a Michigan boy and to justify wasting two-plus years with Brian Hunter in center field. As a lefty with impeccable control and good movement on a fastball in the upper 80s, he’ll get every chance to make it in Detroit. I have a good feeling about him, if only because every prospect that Woody Woodward traded away comes back to haunt the Mariners.
2001 The Tigers could have gotten nothing for Brian L. Hunter and come out ahead; instead, Woody Woodward gave them a quality left-hander. Andy Van Hekken throws a live heater that kisses 90 mph, but the thing that makes his fastball special is his uncanny ability to locate it. He sets it up nicely with his off-speed pitches while occasionally abandoning them if they’re not clicking early in the game. It may seem ludicrous for us to try and project a hurler from low-A ball since so much can happen in the next few years, but it beats rehashing the career of Mike Oquist.
