YearComment
2003 Not too long ago, Paniagua was one of the better unheralded relievers in the league, but heís lost a lot off his fastball in the last two years. Given an opportunity out of spring training to be the setup reliever in a very favorable environment (pitching in a pitchersí park on a non-contender), he was inconsistent and earned a demotion in July. Recalled in late August, he made five scoreless appearances, and was then racked on September 5 by the Yankees and released two days later. If there is no physical problem that is causing the loss of velocity, he could get another chance in a pitching-poor organization.
2002 When Paniagua didnít come in to set Carl Everett on his ass for Everettís crotch-grabbing, foul-mouthed performance August 14, it was obvious the last coals in Mt. Piniella had cooled, and there was no reason to carry Paniagua any longer. He was part of the Cirillo deal, banished to pitchers' hell one mile above sea level.
2001 Jose Paniagua always had electric stuff but struggled with the base on balls. Roberto Hernandez exorcised that demon, instructing Paniagua to spread his fingers further apart on his fastball for better command. Heíll be the teamís primary setup man this year, working in tough late-inning situations and occasionally making a fashion statement by sporting red fingernail polish when he pitches. Piniella tends to ride the hot hand, so he needs to be mindful not to overuse Paniagua.
2000 He was so effective in April and May that he was overused and posted a 4.85 ERA over the last four months of the season. Paniagua racks up strikeouts and ground balls with his 95 mph heater and a sharp breaking slider, and can be nearly untouchable when his control is on. He still seems to have Piniellaís confidence and should be first in line for the closer job when Mesa implodes.
1999 Has always been able to pitch, and he certainly showed it with Tacoma this year, pitching extremely well in a tough environment, including just 2 homers allowed in 68.1 innings. Still, he's a groundballer who will have to deal with Seattle's turf and porous infield defense. Caution is recommended.
1998 Spent most of the season in Triple-A, where he showed good control but not much else. Strikeout ratio has dropped alarmingly. Taken by the Devil Rays in the Expansion Draft.
1997 A surprise addition to the staff in April after Carlos Perez went out for the year, Paniagua pitched admirably as a starter despite no experience above AA. Heís an extreme groundball pitcher, and survived his trial-by-fire without very good control. He started to dominate hitters about a month after he was sent down to AAA, and last yearís experience should really give him an edge for the #5 starter job this year. I like his future more than his numbers say I should.
1996  He has his youth, but little else.
