BP Annual Player Comments

YearComment
2007 We list Ruben Rivera`s name as a reminder of just how thin this system is on position player talent; other blasts from the past who accumulated significant time in the Sox` system this year include Mark Quinn and Ernie Young. The remainder of these players need a good year to remain on the organization`s radar.
2003 I had a Ruben Rivera comment, but I put it in Derek Jeterís locker, and now itís gone.
2002 Plugged into a part-time role, Ruben Rivera turned in a season that looked useful. His strikeout and walk rates did not really change, so there isnít reason to believe heís improved. He will not be an All-Star or a good regular, but he can be a nice caddy for a left-handed-hitting center fielder who needs a defensive replacement. He may get a chance to do exactly that for Marvin Benard, as Rivera was claimed on waivers by the Giants in November. Non-tendered, and a free agent at this writing.
2001 Few other teams would have blown 1,000 major-league at-bats on a player of this apparent skill level. Ruben Rivera has the best situation he could hope for in San Diego. The last thing management wants to do is dump him and watch him hit 40 bombs somewhere else, and there isnít a good candidate on the roster to take over center field, so itíll probably be more of the same next year.
2000 Rivera will go through streaks when he puts it all together, and he just takes your breath away. Heís got a beautiful swing and is second only to Andruw Jones in center field, but he endured long dry spells at the plate in 1999. Heís worth keeping an eye on; more consistency is all thatís standing between him and an All-Star berth.
1999 He didn't make the Padres out of spring training, went to Las Vegas, and was terrible there, swinging at anything. The Padres called him up anyway, and he responded by being very selective and hitting well, while playing excellent defense. Whatever works, I guess. He'll be the everyday center fielder now that Finley has skipped town, and he should significantly outperform that projection.
1998 Rivera has been ready for a major league job for two years now. Heís got the speed and glove to be an everyday center fielder in the majors, but a bad shoulder injury may have taken away what was a fearsome arm. He lost some ground with a rash of injuries this year (including a broken hand in winter ball), but heís ready to take Greg Vaughnís job right now.
1997 Rivera slipped a notch in the eyes of many this year due to a perceived ďattitude problem.Ē Frankly, if Iím the third-best outfielder in my organization, play well at the major league level in my short time and subsequently get sent down so Gerald Williams can play, Iíll express some displeasure too. Deserves 600 at bats in New York, this year, but needs an OíNeill or Raines deal to get them.
1996  I don't know anyone that doesn't think this guy's going to be nearly as good as the hype. You may include me in that bunch. Steady improvement, 22 this year, will take a walk, and hits the snot out of the ball.

I remain hopeful that they are experiencing the usual growing pains. Both of those guys are incredibly young. Of course, I'm still waiting for Ruben Rivera and Sean Burroughs. Any moment now, I can feel it. (Geoff Young)
