2017-05-08 20:00:00 (link to chat)Help me! I'm holding these six struggling bats in an OBP league: Chris Davis, Carlos Santana, Lorenzo Cain, Yasmany Tomas, Joey Bautista, and Yasiel Puig. Davis has 7! RBI's, Bautista looks like a shell of his former self, and Cain can't seem to get any counting stats beside SB. How would you rank them ROS, and who would you give up on?
(matzabal from CO)
I'd like to see Santana hit a few more homers, but otherwise he is what he is. And that's pretty good in an OBP league. I think Bautista will be better, but the days of him being a top 20 OF are probably long gone. I'd go Santana, Cain, Tomas, Davis, Puig, Bautista. (Mark Barry)
2017-05-22 23:00:00 (link to chat)Has it gotten to the point that Andrew McCutchen can be dropped in shallow leagues? In an OPB league, I have Cutch, Bautista and Cain (+ injured Pollock) as my OF, with Yasmany Tomas, Puig, Dickerson, Broxton and Holliday available. Which (if any) of those FAs merit dropping Cutch, Bautista or Cain?
(matzabal from CO)
First off, that must be some kinda shallow league with those dudes floating around in the FA pool. Corey Dickerson's literally been a top-20 overall player in standard 5x5s, and Broxton & Puig have both been top-100 guys. I like Broxton best of the bunch, but hard to argue with Dickerson's production thus far. I'd probably figure out a way to grab both, with Dickerson's hot hand the priority. (Wilson Karaman)
2017-04-05 23:00:00 (link to chat)Thinking about acquiring Yasmany Tomas via trade as my 4th OF in my 16 team dynasty. Do you think there is still upside in the bat? How long will his defense play in the outfield?
(fightingmoose from MB, Canada)
Well, by FRAA he was pretty much the worst defensive outfielder in baseball last year, and it was pretty not-close, so...that's where the baseline starts. It gives him a thinner margin than most, and I do wonder how long that'll fly for the new brass in AZ, even if he's still got another gear of dinger-hitting in the bat. I just recently drafted him to be my 4th outfielder in a 16-team dynasty league, so there's your answer far as my view on at least his this-year value. But longer-term...eh. (Wilson Karaman)
2016-03-07 13:00:00 (link to chat)The D-Backs decision to trade Inciarte was bold...it means they really need Yasmany Tomas to not suck this year for that move to work. What is your take on Tomas? Will he improve, or is he just the 2nd coming of Damian Viciedo?
(Q-Ball from Chicago)
Calling anyone the second Dayan Viciedo is fightin' words, where I come from. I've never been high on Tomas, but the Diamondbacks need to have Shelby Miller not suck this year for that deal to pay off. It's a lot easier for the Snakes to find a new corner outfielder than to find a consistent No. 2 starter, that's why they dealt Inciarte. (Bryan Grosnick)
2015-09-21 20:30:00 (link to chat)What can we expect from Yasmany Tomas from here on out? Can he tap in to that power more next year? Some of the Cubans have taken a year or so to get their bearings. His 2nd half has been bad but what do we have here?
(Mike Ivie from San Francisco)
I think we've seen both the good and bad from Tomas this year, but it's important to remember that he's just 24 and was not a finished product when he arrived from Cuba. I think he will tap into the power as he gets more comfortable with the speed of the MLB game, but the plate discipline may just be what it is. Realistically, he can be a .260-.270 hitter with 20 homers in the medium-term. (Bret Sayre)
2015-09-09 13:00:00 (link to chat)He's obviously not a prospect any more, but is it likely that Yasmany Tomas can really grow from year one to year two? His approach appears to need a ton of work. How likely do feel it is that he makes that improvement?
(jwise224 from DTLA)
There's definitely some growth that's likely to happen, even if Tomas isn't a prototypical "prospect" guy. Players make adjustments. They have to, or the careers are very, very short. Overall, I think Tomas has been okay this year, considering that he looked like a dumpster fire in spring training. (Christopher Crawford)
2015-06-30 19:00:00 (link to chat)Yoan Moncada or Eddy Julio MArtinez?
(Mike from NJ)
Moncada, just because we have some data to look at. If I just go off of the scouting reports it's almost a tie, but for every Jose Abreu there is a Yasmany Tomas, who is good right out of the gate but doesn't live up to 100% of the hype. (Mike Gianella)
2015-04-16 17:00:00 (link to chat)I know the BP prospect team is down on Jake Lamb, is his performance unsustainable? ie should I be shopping him?
(EricJ from SF)
I like him better than they do (I guess; I haven't read what you're referencing). He's probably not going to hit 25-30 home runs, but 20 isn't out of the question even if the BA is low. I guess if people are expecting Ryan Zimmerman 2.0 in your league you should shop him, otherwise hang on. Yasmany Tomas isn't replacing him. (Mike Gianella)
2015-02-26 20:00:00 (link to chat)Assuming Rusney Castillo and Yasmany Tomas were included in your dynasty top 101, where would they fill in? Is there any growth left for these guys?
(Steve from Long Beach)
They'd both be towards the back of the top-20 in value alone. But Castillo is a finished product. Tomas at least still has some growth opportunity--and a nice park in which to flash that power. (Bret Sayre)
2015-02-25 14:00:00 (link to chat)In a dynasty redraft league would you draft Carlos Rodon or Rusney Castillo? I have 3rd overall pick and the first two teams are taking Yoan Moncada, and the Yasmany Tomas.
(jdc1989 from St. Louis)
I'm not a huge fantasy guy, but I do play one pretty serious league - that I will admit I haven't won in a while. Fantasy baseball is usually a nightmare for people who work in and around baseball since they never have time in the summer to pay a whole lot of attention - and whenever they DON'T win, the guy who does win brags "my buddy is a scout for (team X) and I just beat him in fantasy!" Fun stuff. I get out to a lot of games in the Spring and Summer so I don't often get to watch my fantasy guys a whole lot.

Anyway... in my experience in fantasy though, I feel like I can always find a decent outfielder easier than I can find an above average pitcher. This seems pretty much true regardless of format, size, etc... There's just a lot of useful outfielders even though you can start three. The very top guys are great and all (ie. Trout), but I'm a lot more confident I can find myself an outfielder even in a deep dynasty league than I can a pitcher like Rodon could be. This is still true even though position players and position player prospects are on average tremendously safer bets than pitchers and pitching prospects. Arms are just riskier... and harder to project, less stable skill sets - not just about higher rate of injury.

I actually got a live look at Rusney last fall and he's a pretty talented player. I'm also not the highest guy on our prospect staff on Rodon. He didn't wow me when I saw him live (I actually preferred Jeff Hoffman's raw stuff, pre-surgery). I worried about his back issues going back to high school, too. My biggest dings on him were his FB command (often misses spots and heater rises up arm side) and overuse of his SL/cut. I don't see Rodon as being a true #1 starter because of those issues, but he certainly looks like a very good big league starter and he's basically there right now. Full disclosure wise - plenty of people in baseball would say (and did in fact say) that I'm really nitpicking here and that Rodon is going to be a monster. He's a big, durable (hopefully), lefty with plus to double-plus velo and a true out pitch. Even the downside of Rodon is appealing enough for me to pass on Rusney. Boston's plethora of lineup options kind of bugs me for fantasy value, too. Could they mix and match 4-5 guys with Mookie, Victorino and Allen Craig stealing ABs from Rusney? I don't think they laid out $70 million to sit him, though. In either case, I don't think it's possible to overstate how much the White Sox absolutely adore Rodon. In many way he's as safe a top starting pitching prospect as you will ever find available in a dynasty draft/auction and he's also a great bet to pay dividends quickly. (Al Skorupa)
2015-01-15 18:00:00 (link to chat)Who has a greater impact on their respective team, Rusney Castillo, or Yasmany Tomas? Why?
(Ron from Texarkana)
I'll take Rusney Castillo. Between the defensive value and more comfort with the application of the hit tools, I think Castillo can be an above-average everyday player in the short term (and possibly more long term). Tomas doesn't carry the defensive profile and there are enough questions about the translation of the hitting ability, that his impact could take a while to evolve, if it ever truly does. (Mark Anderson)
2015-01-15 18:00:00 (link to chat)What are your thoughts on Yasmany Tomas? I ask because I have the #1 pick in my dynasty league and unless Moncada signs, I might have to take Tomas. Is there any chance we could see another Abreu type here? The more I look at him, the more I see a .240-.250 AVG with 25 HR's. Not bad, but not elite. Here's to hoping Yoan Moncada signs so Yahoo puts him in their system!
(Bill Clinton from CA)
I don't see a scenario where Tomas turns into Jose Abreu; despite what seems like similar concerns over his hit tool. With Abreu, scouts were split on how he would fare (he obviously fared quite well). With Tomas, I haven't seen much of a split in the scouting community, more of a consensus that he's not going to hit much, but when he does it will likely be with some authority and power. The adjustment period for Tomas could be more extended than some of the more recent Cuban imports, but he should still provide some power, if you can manage the likely low average on your fantasy team. (Mark Anderson)
2015-02-13 19:00:00 (link to chat)What rooks do u see making an impact in the bigs this year?
(Tico Pride from Costa Rica)
In fantasy, there are quite a few. Rusney Castillo, Yasmany Tomas, Steven Souza, Kris Bryant, and Joc Pederson are all names that pop. (Mike Gianella)
2015-02-16 11:00:00 (link to chat)What kind of stats do you realistically expect from Yasmany Tomas this year ?
(Bob from Mesa, AZ)
Whoever wrote his Annual comment threw a 2014 Khris Davis comp on him. I haven't seen any of him, so at this point I can't disagree with that evaluation. Check back in a month or two. (R.J. Anderson)
2014-12-11 18:00:00 (link to chat)How good is Yasmany Tomas? My best guess is player who'll need/benefit from a year in AAA, followed by low average/high power in the bigs? Is that fair? I feel like I've read wildly varying opinons
(Bill from Tempe)
I think Tomas is going to be a solid player, but I wouldn't expect results like Abreu, Puig, etc. There's going to be a substantial amount of swing and miss in the game and I haven't heard convincing cases from MLB scouts that the approach is going to lend to enough quality contact for the power to play at a maximum level. It's more likely he ends up producing as a low-average, above-average to plus power guy with modest OBPs and limited defensive value. (Mark Anderson)
2014-07-15 13:00:00 (link to chat)Do you know anything about Yasmany Tomas? Is he a prospect like Jorge Soler or is he more MLB ready like Cespedas/Puig?
(Rick from WV)
I do not know anything about him right now. Sorry. (Paul Sporer)
