To honor Canada on its special day, Baseball Prospectus has added two statistics to the custom sortable leaderboards.

True Average Minus Batting Average (TAV_MINUS_AVG) intends to provide a quick look at whether a player’s batting average is “full” or “empty.” Here are the five “fullest” batting averages, determined by this metric:

Player: TAv_Minus_Avg
Adam Dunn: .103
Jose Bautista: .079
Carlos Pena: .073
Russell Martin: .064
Trevor Plouffe: .061

And the “emptiest”:

Player: TAv_Minus_Avg
Alcides Escobar: -.049
Derek Jeter: -.039
Michael Young: -.036
Chris Heisey: -.035
Marco Scutaro: -.034

As a companion stat, we’ve also added Fielding Independent Pitching minus Earned Run Average (FIP_MINUS_ERA). As the name implies, this is a pitcher’s FIP minus his ERA. It’s supposed to provide a quick reference for how much a pitcher is over or under-pitching to his peripheral stats. Here are the largest positive gaps:

Pitcher: FIP_Minus_ERA
Jeremy Hellickson: 1.68
Brandon Beachy: 1.51
Ryan Vogelsong: 1.48
Barry Zito: 1.19
Ryan Dempster: 1.19

And the largest negative gaps:

Pitcher: FIP_Minus_ERA
Tim Lincecum: -1.93
Jake Arrieta: -1.85
Jeff Samardzija: -1.31
Max Scherzer: -1.29
Luke Hochevar: -1.27

I've been unable to customize the splits reports for a couple of days. Why are there batter value reports, but not pitcher value reports? Also, I'd like those available for batter and pitcher splits.

Rob, you'll find pitcher value stats--WARP, PVORP, etc.--in the "Pitcher Team - Standard" report. Can you explain the bit about being unable to customize the sortables? What browser are you using?

I'm using Google Chrome 20. Example: Select Statistics from Batter Splits by Pit-Hand Under "Your Selections" there are a number of fields I want to eliminate, so I select them and click on the left button and nothing happens. Likewise, I want to add BATTER to the mix, select, click on right arrow, nothing happens.

Seems to be an issue with Chrome, as it functions with IE.

Off topic stat location question: where can one find SIERA on this site? Thanks.

One can't.

Public Service Announcement: for a more detailed explanation for why BP no longer publishes SIERA, see this article: http://www.baseballprospectus.com/article.php?articleid=14603

...and of course, now I notice the hyperlink that Ben included in his response. Enjoy my obliviousness, folks, I'll be here all week.

I would enjoy your obliviousness, but, well, I wasn't aware of it. :)

Why add them to the leaderboards and not the player cards? I mean, basically, if these stats are used in an article, I can't just click on the player's name to look them up, right?

I don't think they make as much sense on the player cards. FIP, ERA, TAv, and AVG are all on the cards, so you can do the quick arithmetic yourself if you want to compare them for any particular player. The sortables allow us to search for the extremes.

I was going to say "You could make the same argument for OPS or W-L PCT" until I realized neither of those were on the player cards either.

We have many, many more stats in the custom sorts than we can fit into the player cards.

When will BP provide the #want statistics?

When their statistical tests on the control subject, Brett Lawrie, return.

"Plus" on the new stats.
