Hello beta testers. We've been developing a new front-end for Jeff Euston's Cots Contracts database, and we're almost ready to go, so its time to give you a preview of the cunningly-named Compensation pages.

Please feel free to leave comments and questions in this comment thread.

Click here to visit the Compensation pages.

Thanks again for participating in the beta test program.

Wow ... I clicked through a few levels, and I LOVE the new format in development.

One request ... do you have "service time" listed anywhere?

thanks--we're still cleaning up the page frame, but you'll be seeing it other places soon.

We do not have service time in here--I will see about adding it.

I must be doing it wrong.

For an example of the old format at Cot's:

https://spreadsheets.google.com/pub?key=tj-P0iqRziTxMyVMEmTUPOA&output=html

The new format either eliminates a lot of information I want (like an overview of the entire contract for the player) or has lost me. Additionally, many players have no information about their contract status other than current salary (and this includes many big names.)

Is there a way currently that I can find out from this Carl Crawford's contract terms without going through multiple pages? From my point of view, the original format was much more readable and had much more information.

Hope this helps.

thanks for the feedback. You should be able to get to everything Cot's knows about a player on his player card, but let me see if we can get something about the player's current contract in here.

I put the contract history into a tooltip, if you mouse over the player's name. Let me know what you think.

Like dianagram, I think the new format is a huge upgrade.
Regarding the information presented in the Compensation Pages, I would state clearly the difference between opening day payroll and year-end payroll. Was not clear. I am assuming, with only some confidence, that you have listed opening day payroll. I would clarify that.
Again, like dianagram, I think service time should be easy to find, as well as remaining options. In short - it's a handy tool, but what I would want (blue-sky phase) would be more granularity - bonuses available and accrued, accounting for salary of MLB-contract players currently in the minor leagues, if accounting is made for players changing teams, an explanation for how, or where to look at it.
Definitely on the right path, though.

thanks. Jeff Euston will explain the payroll status in his intro article, coming soon.

One last thing - would it be possible to make the individual columns in the team section sortable? Otherwise, I quite like it.

Could you please send a URL? All the columns should be sortable already, and I don't see any which are failing, but I could be missing a combination.

http://www.baseballprospectus.com/compensation/index.php?team=TOR&cyear=2011. I want to sort by any of the columns, say WARP/$M. Does that make sense?

you should already be able to sort by any of those columns just by clicking one. its not going to work until the page finishes loading, though.

Not happening. I use Chrome, if it;s any help. No sign that the page is loading. Cursor over the column headers makes them seem like plain text from here.

Yeah, we don't change the cursor at all, but if you click, it should still sort. I'm not having any trouble at the page you linked, using Chrome, and I'm logged in as a "basic" user for testing purposes, so I don't think it's a case of extra privileges or anything.

If it works for you, and it's just a matter of us needing to document the functionality better (sort arrows, changing cursor, or something), we can look into that. I don't know what to say if it's not sorting for you, though. It works fine here in Windows 7 using IE, FF, Chrome, and Safari.

You are correct, sir. I was totally thrown off by the cursor. Deceived by years of cursor behaviour.
