Whenever I see a “breakout performance” from a pitcher with a history well dappled with injuries, I typically dismiss it as a random event that is bound to change with regression to the mean. However, when that success is sustained over an extended period and actually continues to improve, I’m compelled to dig into the numbers to see if it’s real, or just smoke and mirrors.
