We always think we’ll end up disagreeing more than we end up disagreeing. “Averaging out” two individual lists isn’t quite as simple as it seems, you see. When one of us ranks a player (Bo Bichette) 15th and the other 17th, it’s easy enough to reconcile the difference. But what about when one of us ranks a player (Alec Hansen) 38 and the other lists him at 74? How do you reconcile one list having a player (Jack Flaherty) at 67 and the other list not having that player at all?

You get on the phone or you hop on gchat and you hash it out, is the answer, and you involve a heavy does of outside critique as well (thanks, Craig). It’s time consuming and involves more research and it often ends up in a ranking that neither of us are super happy with, but that we can both live with. It keeps us honest. It teaches us a few new things. We have a healthy relationship, is what we’re saying.

Now, we’d be in trouble if we had to do that for 30 or 40 players, but this year, we only had to do it for…about seven. Yes, we only had seven players (among the first 90 — for the last 10 we just hand pick favorites) ranked more than 25 spots away from each other on our initial lists. Why are we telling you this and why should you care? To give you fair notice that, as much as the two-person approach to list-making tries to chip away at our little echo chamber, it’s fair to say that chamber is still very real. We talk a lot. We have some of the same sources. The overlap is inevitable. It’s how we had Luis Garcia ranked in the 50s before Craig talked us off the ledge. It’s why non-elite pitchers are arguably undervalued. It’s why we still even bothered to mention Zack Collins at all (luv u, Bret). If you’ve read us before, you’ll see our biases here. We don’t know that it’s inherently bad, but we felt it worthy of mentioning.

So keep that in mind when you’re browsing this list. Oh, and it’s a good list, by the way. There’s a ton of talent at the top. There are sleepers galore. We’re stuck with fewer “well, at least he’s close to the majors” types overall this year. The players just seem more fun, and that makes the list more fun, and we think you’ll enjoy reading about the talent.

There are a few list-specific disclaimers to go over before we jump in. Again, these rankings are for fantasy purposes only, and do not directly take into account things like an outfielder’s ability to stick in center or a catcher’s pop time. Of course, these things do matter indirectly as they affect a player’s ability to either stay in the lineup or maintain eligibility. Additionally, home parks and organizational strengths need to be factored in, just as when we are talking about a major-league player. We can’t pretend that these prospects operate in a vacuum, unaffected by park factors. Of course, there’s no guarantee that they will reach the majors with their current organization, so while it is reflected, it’s not a heavy ranking factor. Most importantly, the intention of this list is to balance the upside, probability, and proximity of these players to an active fantasy lineup.

Within the list below, you’ll find important information about each prospect, including their potential fantasy value (in dollars) at their peak and the risk factor associated with reaching their projected output. Also, you will find a fantasy overview, which summarizes how many categories each player will be useful in, along with any that carry impact. For this exercise, we defined “impact” has having the potential to be in the top 15-20 players in a given category. For instance, impact in home runs roughly equates to the potential to hit 30, impact in steals is 25, and impact for strikeouts is the potential to punch out 200. Then you’ll see a realistic ceiling and floor for each prospect, purely in terms of rotisserie value. The comments are brief because we’ve already written fantasy-specific comments on each of these players in the individual top-10 lists.

Now that you’ve read the not-so-fine print (just kidding, we know no one reads list intros), here are your new best 101 prospects for dynasty leagues:

Great article from a war criminal. The ceilings and floors are always delightful and insightful. Lot of Padres on this list (along with ones that I think one of you said you really like, i.e. Potts), so how wary are you to draft too many players from the same franchise? I'm sure some move over time, but it's still all your eggs in one basket, and maybe the Padres trade Medical/Training staffs with the Mets...
Ben Carsley

I'm not that worried because I'm still fairly sure they could kill 10,000 rats

Love this feature. It's a lot to ask but it'd be fun to see an Adjuster take on this for OBP/points.

Was Rooker anywhere close to making this list?
Ben Carsley
2/16
Not particularly, but he's comfortably in the next 100
Mac Guyver
2/17
Agreed. Rooker is a pretty risky profile, but there is actually fantasy upside there. Especially when you consider that Jeren Kendall is on the list, who has zero chance of ever having any value other than a defensive OF. The fun of these lists is always the subjective nature.

how close were Corey ray and Ryan vilade?

Both would probably be in the next 50, but for very different reasons. The reports on Ray are ugggggly.

What about Chris Shaw? Wondering about a guy who could have a decent impact this year for a fantasy team playing for this year, but not a cornerstone for dynasty team going forward.
Ben Carsley
2/16
Good question. There' s an argument for guys like that -- Shaw, Bauers, Christin Stewart, etc -- to show up near the end of this list ahead of the teenagers with high bust rates we tend to gamble on. But ultimately, guys like Shaw end up being pretty replaceable, whereas if a Brandon Marsh or a Khalil Lee hits, you'd have a premium trade chip or good player on your hands. We have a bit of a blind spot for guys like Shaw -- we weren't super high on Trey Mancini, Rhys Hoskins, etc -- so do what you will with our bias. Just remember that a bunch of those dudes turn into, like, CJ Cron instead.
jonjacoby
2/16
Thanks Ben. My league we are 18-team mix ed keeper (not dynasty) but have only 3 minor league spots per team so getting help from a Mancini-type player might be more beneficial than holding on to Eustuary Ruiz for 3 years.

Where would Amad Rosario of Mets, and Devers of BoSox rank if they both saw limited time like Alfaro on this list?
Bret Sayre

For me, Devers would rank second to Acuna and Rosario would slot in behind Vlad.

Love this yearly article.......I am in a pickle, can only keep 5 of the following, (see below) all have 3 year contracts before salary inflation begins in my keeper league. (some are pretty obvious keeps) BUT if I can use say a "Tucker" for a off-season trade piece now should I? and then keep Soto or someone else due to the High depth I have.
My options: 2B-K.Hiura $1, 3B-N.Senzel $8, OF-R.Acuna $3, OF-K.Tucker $1, OF-Soto $2,
OF-C.Frazier $1, P-A.Reyes $1, P-M.Keller $2. Thanks
Ben Carsley
2/17
I'd leep Acuna and Tucker, then either Reyes or Soto depending on the rest of your team.
Stefan Wasylko
2/18
It's any 5 of the following, not 3. I really like Soto and think he will be a top 5 guy next year, so I am entertaining of using Tucker as trade bait this off-season? thanks
James Leahy

I’m surprised that Tristen Lutz did not even make the Honorable Mentions. Was he close?

Supposing Dahl didn't lose his prospect status year before last, where would he be on this list?

Also, why the demotion for Isan Diaz? Fielding concerns, bat not as good as projected, or?
Bret Sayre
2/20
Layne, I'd have Dahl right at the top of the third tier, just ahead of Brinson. There's just so much potential even if the risk is still rather high. With Diaz, for me, it's another year of not taking that step forward. He'll be 22 shortly and still hasn't taken an at-bat in the upper minors. He's also already made the shift off SS, so honestly this ranking feels more aggressive than not given these circumstances.
