Prospectus Idol: Week Four Results

by Dave Pease

Our Prospectus Idol contestants had a task for Week Four that will be familiar to regular readers–to pick a subject and build the perfect Player Profile about them. Selected comments from our judges:

“At the end, I was nodding my head.” — Will Carroll, on Matthew Knight

“I do think you needed an editor — not for writing or grammar, but to decide what to put in here and what to take out.” — Kevin Goldstein, on Matt Swartz

“I love the confidence you show talking about a player that people aren’t considering the way your conclusion does, and the fact that you explained the disconnect between the opposing viewpoints brought up by PECOTA’s optimism.” — Marc Normandin, on Brian Oakchunas

“What we got was something solid but unspectacular–instead of tool time, we got a grinder’s effort.” — Christina Kahrl, on Brian Cartwright

“Ken gets in his own way a lot, from the title to the needless Batman sounds.” — Carroll, on Ken Funck

“An excellent Profile overall, and fine work.” — Kahrl, on Tim Kniker

This was another close week for voting–many voters commented on how all of the entries were solid competitors. But the first rule of Prospectus Idol is that someone goes home every week, and Tyler Hissey will be leaving us this time around. Thank you for all your hard work, Tyler, and we’re looking forward to seeing what you do next.

Tyler, good work. You were always solid and seemed to be improving as well. Keep writing!

So much for the easy money I thought I made betting that Kniker would be kicked off. Does anyone ever have anything good to say about this guy's writing? Seriously, excellent job each round.

And so much for subliminal messaging... Will includes a link to those two hot babes in Tyler's comment section and still no love. FYI, the best photo is the last one.

Thanks for the love, NL2003!

Also a message to my peeps out there(I'm really getting into this Idol thing)! My wife and I are going away for our anniversary from Sunday to Tuesday this upcoming weekend, and I don't know how much I'm going to be able to comment on this upcoming article. It's not that I forgot about it or am stewing from the likely negative comments. :-)

If it's your anniversary, doesn't that mean it's your wife's turn to stew?

Tyler, great run.

The eliminations from this point on are going to be brutal. While I agree with the voters that Tyler's was the one of the weaker articles this week, I think all of the contestants could be BP writers and be valuable contributors to this site.

I disagree slightly... I don't think Tyler's was the weakest article from this week. I think his bar was just set a bit higher because he had done Player Profile pieces for this contest before and people needed _some_ criteria on which to vote.

It was an honor to be a contestant in this competition with nine other excellent writers. This entire experience was a blast and I am grateful for the opportunity.

Thanks to Basbeall Prospectus and all of the readers. And good luck to the remaining contestants.

The voting results are starting to make more sense. In the first two weeks, the elimiated writer had penned an article for which I voted (Byron's was my favourite article of week 1). The last two weeks, the eliminated author has been someone who has never garnered my vote.

Though that can't last - there's only one author left for whom I've never voted.

Btw is the next week topic no longer being revealed? Seems the format has changed since the first week.

Last week's results announcement didn't contain the next week's topic.

Week 1 and Week 2 did though.

And the results get posted at different times too.. sometimes late Tuesday night, and sometimes Wednesday morning.

Next week's topic is history. I don't have the full text that was sent, but I do know that Steven Goldman will be our guest judge this week.

Here were the instructions:
"From baseball history from the 19th or 20th centuries, pick a player, team, event, season, or issue on the subject of major league baseball, and do whatever you please with it. If you pick a player as the object of your focus, say to talk about his Hall of Fame case, or to do a Goldmanesque retrospective, do *not* pick an active player."

Tyler is a fine writer, with smooth prose. I found this week's article to be his best effort thus far. If he's still reading, a consistent note I've made about is past pieces is that his analysis has been a bit too generic - don't be afraid to go out on a limb and say something interesting - backing it up is a great way to grow your writerly chops - good luck in the future
