BP Idol Week Three Topic

by Christina Kahrl

With Week Two’s result now in the books, the contestants can move on to their Week Three assignment, which was given to them by Idol judge Kevin Goldstein earlier this week:

Congratulations, and welcome to Week Three of Prospectus Idol … other than the one who gets voted out, of course.

Once again, we wanted to make sure you had enough lead time to put together the best possible piece for next week. Thus, we will reveal the Week Three theme before we know who is out.

This week’s theme is . . . . . drum roll . . . .

BASEBALL BELOW THE BIG LEAGUES.

In other words, welcome to my world. Once again, this is a broad, broad subject. You can write about prospects, the minor leagues, the draft, high school baseball, North Dakota Little League playoffs, Japan, Honkball, you name it, you just can’t write about the big leagues.

Again, your deadline is noon Pacific time on Friday and articles should be sent in standard format, and as always be sure to check in with Christina if you have any questions about formatting. If you have any other questions, feel free to reach out to us.

Good luck folks!

Independent leagues? They're conspicuously absent from your list of suggestions.

Should any of the contestants elect to go in that direction, the independent leagues would be entirely in-bounds.

I agree that this is a great topic, i think it may put several of the remaining writers well outside their comfort zone. Having said that if i had any advice for them, find a way to talk to a scout, get some input from that side of the equation and then if your gonna crunch numbers either compare or contrast. Just a thought.

I will vote thumbs up on any contestant that talks about one of the three players on my fantasy minor league roster. Of course, I'm not telling who they are ;)

Gonna be a good week.

In high school a friend of mine built a whiffleball field at his parents' farm. It had chalked lines, snow fence wrapped in black trash bags for the outfield fence in left and center, and a 40' ham radio antenna for the left field fair pole. The right field fence was a metal pole shed, which we called "The Silver Monster".

It was the coolest thing ever, and by a wide margin.

Petco: He's a very good dog!

PetSmart: His VORD (Value Over Replacement Dog) is solid enough, but only if your translations include exotic breeds and kennels on other continents.

lol was at a PetCo earlier today! Didn't even realize I wrote that (obviously).

He would be a very expensive pet! Pure Breed Catchers for sale.

I'm looking forward to this. I'd love to see someone win this competition who can compliment Kevin Goldstein with stat-based analysis of prospects in the way that Nate Silver used to do.

This could be a good week for Brian Cartwright since he did some work on MLEs for his initial entry.

but how many MLE articles can you do? I'm working on one of about three ideas I had, none of them using numbers, giving the calculator a week off...baby coming on Friday so I need to wrap this up earlier if possible.

Really looking forward to these articles, was hoping it would come up while there was still a large number of competitors to contrast and thus hopefully give diverse topics.

Beyond the outfield wall in Ranger Ballpark in Arlington (soon to be Goody's Headache Powder Ballpark in Doctor Pepper Arlington) there is a whiffle ball park. At least once during each game, there is a contest up on the jumbotron where a kid gets to hit one out of the park. If he makes it, he gets something cool (like an invitation to spring training or something or a chance at the DH position).

But I'm not sure that counts since its INSIDE a major league stadium.

On a more serious note, The class A Hickory Crawdads are sporting a team ERA of 2.90
