While everyone is trying to figure out who’s going to end up in the post-seasons, wackjobs in my little world are also focused on the bottom feeders in the standing to figure out who is going to have the first pick in next year’s draft, which will likely provide the opportunity to add San Diego State’s Stephen Strasburg to the mix. Some are already proclaiming him the best college pitcher since Mark Prior, and projecting him as an absolute ace. So going into today’s games here are the current odds to earn the No. 1 pick in the draft, courtesy once again, of the great Clay Davenport.
Mariners: 53.19%
Nationals: 46.78%
Padres: 0.03%
Tie-breakers are determined by the worst record in the previous year, so the Nationals win any tie-breaker, and Seattle beats the Padres.
The Nationals game last night was cancelled. Imagine the outrage if they finish the season needing just 1 loss to overtake the Mariners!
By the same token, a franchise in their position needs to understand that losses in March count just as much as losses in September. If they don't start out the season on a 3-game win streak prior to finding their stride (2-15 over their next 17), the Nationals would find themselves much more advantageously positioned to fail this fall.
The Mariners have worked hard to take that lead (12 game losing streaks take commitment). Let's hope they don't blow it.
