Remember when you’d run home from classes to see the 6pm Sportscenter or Baseball Tonight? That a play didn’t really happen until you heard Peter and Harold raving about it? It’s been a while since we had that kind of feeling in our instant-on, on-demand world, but you’ll have it again if you’ve got an iPhone.

While the rest of the world waits on updates, the new MLB.com application (available for iPhone 2.0 devices, including the iPhone 3G and the original iPhone) will be showing you the plays. On sale now for $4.95, MLB’s application is a simple scoreboard with basic information …

… until you click on the little camera icon and you realize that same sort of “that just happened” rush.

Then you see the simple but amazing video quality (available on 3G, Wi-Fi, or Edge) of plays. It’s not instant, but it’s pretty close and gives you what you need to know more than just the line score. Here’s a sample of the quality as Josh Hamilton goes deep:

Yes, that’s an unretouched screen cap off the phone and yes, it’s worth every cent of the $4.95. As for the rest of the iPhone, it’s up to you to decide if it’s worth it. If MLB decides to put Gameday or live video streaming on the phone, maybe they should just call it ‘Gamechanger.’
