Worst outfield arms of 2006

by Keith Woolner

Christina challenged the stats crew to have something to say about bad outfield arms and the possibility of a Dodgers Gonzalez-Pierre-Ethier crew, so I thought I’d chime in with my first BP Unfiltered post.

I arbitrarily picked the ability to prevent runners on second from scoring on a single as a criterion for determining badness. For outfield trios seeing at least 30 singles with runners on second, the ones with the fewest runners prevented from scoring (stopping at third or being thrown out) relative to league average (denoted as R2_PREV, negative numbers indicate below average prevention) are:

League average was allowing 60% of runners on 2nd to score on a single.

YEAR TEA OUTFIELD B1R2 SCORED RATIO R2_PREV
2006 TBA Carl Crawford-Rocco Baldelli-Damon Hollins 32 26 .813 -6.8
2006 SFN Barry Bonds-Steve Finley-Randy Winn 49 36 .735 -6.6
2006 NYA Melky Cabrera-Johnny Damon-Bernie Williams 35 26 .743 -5.0
2006 WAS Alfonso Soriano-Marlon Byrd-Jose Guillen 44 31 .705 -4.6
2006 PIT Jason Bay-Jose Bautista-Craig Wilson 31 23 .742 -4.4

2006 SFN Barry Bonds-Randy Winn-Moises Alou 38 25 .658 -2.2

Conversely, the best at preventing runners from scoring on a single were:

2006 OAK Bobby Kielty-Jay Payton-Milton Bradley 30 16 .533 2.0

None of this is park-adjusted, nor does it say how blame for failing to prevent runners from scoring should be allocated across the 3 outfielders. This is just showing how the unit as a whole performed.
