Prospect Battle Update

by Nate Silver

Presented without further commentary below, I’ve presented an update on how the Top 20 prospects according to PECOTA, Kevin Goldstein, and Baseball America have fared thus far this season. Hitters are listed along with their slash stats; the numbers you see for pitchers are (IP/BB/K/ERA). I’ve applied a letter grade to each player based on his performance on the season to date; this is admittedly a bit crude, but I’ve attempted to make some adjustments for things like age, level, and park effects. I’ve also figured a weighted GPA for each list, assigning a weight of 100 to the #1 pick, on down to 25 for the #20 pick, with the weights decreasing linearly in between. I’ve avoided grades below D, since I don’t think it’s fair to go lower than that at this point in the season unless something truly catastrophic has happened.

It’s been an extremely close battle so far; each list has something to brag about (Dustin Pedoria, Justin Upton, Ryan Braun) and other things to be ashamed of. But the Goldstein list ranks a hair ahead of PECOTA so far, which in turn rates a hair ahead of Baseball America.

Also note that I’ve exclude Daisuke Matsuzaka from consideration on the BA list, since Kevin and I did not think he qualified as a prospect. Everyone else’s ranking is adjusted upward accordingly.
