Here’s hoping you’re enjoying the holiday with friends, family, and/or loved ones. In observance of Thanksgiving (and Black Friday), the site’s going to go dark today and Friday, but we’ll be back in action on Sunday with our regular columns and a couple of “So You Need” features. In the meantime, here’s my hope that you all give thanks if you have cause, and enjoy these days for the best reasons.

Evan- I'm offended. The world should honor America. If it wasn't for America we would be speaking Russian or German. Your probably an ungrateful Canadien. You're welcome.
Ok, so three guys walk into a bar. One is a Communist, the second is a Nazi and the third is a starving kid from Angola.
The communist asks the bartender for one of the great unrecognized mixed drinks: A Screaming Nazi. The Nazi finds this completely offensive and uncalled --
"I really don't find joking about Communism and National Socialsim funny."
Oh. Eek, my bad. How awkward. Perhaps some other time.

Fidel Castro, Hugo Chavez and Barack Obama walked into a bar, followed by a group of mafia hitmen.
Castro, "Bartender, a round of Mohitos for the house."
Chavez, "Bartender, a round of Margaritas for the house."
Obama, "Bartender, a round of your best Champagne for the my friends."
Castro, "But you don't have any friends."
The mafia guys finished their champagne and broke Castro's pitching arm (actual baseball content).
Christina, in this time of giving thanks, let me just say thanks to you and the rest of the BP staff for providing so much enjoyment to me for the years you've been doing this. Look forward to seeing you guys at the Yogi Berra museum again this year.

I'm surprised that nobody is backing me up. Isn't anybody else mad that somebody would use a Baseball message board to bash Thanksgiving and America. If you love baseball shouldn't you love America and their "silly" holiday's? I'm angered and tired of the America bashing. What's strange is that most America bashing comes from Americas.
Nobody's "backing you up" because you're overreacting to a fairly lighthearted comment. And, has it occurred to you that what you call "bashing" is often criticism by people who do love American ideals, using the freedom to criticize that is one of the most important of those ideals.
Sorry to waste the baseball bandwidth. I too am thankful for the folks at BP and all the information they provide, giving me a somewhat better basis on which to form my own opinions about players and teams, and the game of baseball.

I back you up, jashnew. We should be thankful of America, not bashing it because of the mistakes of Americans before us. And I thought Obama was going to bring us together...... (Guess we were all wrong on that one).

Shakespeare- I mean Sal, you forgot to capitalize Thanksgiving. I know I forgot to use you're rather than your. It's one of my bad habits. That's besides the point. Canadian Thanksgiving is a joke. They should thank America for defending it for free. I don't recognize Canadian Thanksgiving.
45,300 Canadians died fighting the Axis in World War II. You disrespect their sacrifice by suggesting America fought the war all by itself.
It's ironic that you mention an earlier time when you grew up as being better than today. I'm fairly certain most people during that time were much more respectful of other people's opinions, unlike yourself. They weren't afforded the luxury of false courage that comes with Internet anonymity.
When I think about things "changing for the worse" today, I think of people like you well before people like Evan come to mind.

I'm just mad at the anti-American sentiment that has come into our culture. One of the comments really set me off. When I grew up America was a different place. I see it changing for the worse. I'm sorry. I'll drop it and save the pro-American speech for another blog.
Just heard about the possible suicide of Mike Penner/Christine Daniels. I know you had mentioned Mike/Christine previously in some of your writings about your life, and I just wanted to offer condolences to you over this news, and I seem to remember that the two of you were friends.
Thanks BP.
