Value Picks: Relievers for 5/16/12

1

Dan Mennella

Janssen, Fuentes, and Thayer are discussed in this week's Value Picks

The debate between the old and new schools as to the usefulness of defined bullpen roles is as strong as ever, and with such a high turnover rate in the early going of this season, both sides have had plenty of fodder to build their arguments. For those of us who partake in fantasy leagues, however, such philosophical pedantry is a mere luxury. Chasing saves, after all, is a dirty game, so let’s have a look at some relievers of interest.

A look at the surprising early season success of Baltimore's hitters

Your computer is not broken. The Baltimore Orioles do indeed lead all of baseball in home runs this season with 56. They were quietly the fourth-best team last year with 191 home runs, trailing only the Yankees, Red Sox, and Rangers.  Last season, the Orioles hit 1.18 home runs per game, but in 2012, that pace has spiked to 1.6 per contest… with essentially the same personnel as last year, no less. Nick Johnson—who anointed Joel Peralta his favorite pitcher this weekend when he took him deep twice—is the lone addition to the lineup.

Value Picks: First, Third, and DH for 5/15/12

Michael Street

The majority of Michael’s VP list turns over this week, but he’s got plenty of replacements lined up, including three who picked up their first home run of the year last week.

Statistically speaking, a single home run (like a single hit) is fairly meaningless. It’s the ultimate small sample, showing how one batter did against one pitcher (and one pitch) under one specific set of conditions. But psychologically speaking, when it’s the first home run of the season, it can mean so much more. The hitter feels confident in his swing or relieved at having gotten his first longball of the season out of the way, and it could mean a turnaround is coming. Look at Albert Pujols: in 27 plate appearances since his first jack of the season, he’s picked up 5 RBI—as many as he picked up in the 114 plate appearances before he finally went yard.

Don't overreact to an unprecedented casualty rate for closers.

There’s an old adage in fantasy baseball to “draft skills, not roles.”  The reasoning behind this is that the cream will rise to the top, that the better player will eventually take on the more prominent role.  This advice is often given in regard to closers, but it’s advice which I’ve expressed my disagreement with on multiple occasions.  While “draft skills, not roles” is a romantic notion, studies I’ve run in the past have shown that role is far more important than skill when it comes to saves and that closers in waiting are generally poor investments.

When Fernando Rodney received the first two save opportunities following Kyle Farnsworth’s injury, one site said that “while it would be nice to think that the 35-year-old will continue to close out games so effortlessly, his track record and bullpen competition probably make him one of the biggest sell-high candidates in baseball.”  Rodney proceeded to roll off seven more (consecutive) saves en route to becoming one of the most valuable closers in baseball over the first six weeks.  He had the role, which is more difficult to lose than most assume.

Value Picks: Outfielders for 5/11/12

Ibanez, Reddick, and Dyson get the VP label this week

There was a common perception that Jayson Werth is injury prone, but he went almost four years between stints on the disabled list (his previous being May 23, 2008). His loss hurts fantasy owners, though not nearly as much as it is likely to hurt the on-base-challenged Nationals. Meanwhile, mixed-league afterthought Rick Ankiel becomes a much better risk; the team really needs his power, even if he brings little else to the table offensively. In the fantasy realm, however, owners can do a lot better when searching for a replacement in most league formats, which is where Value Picks comes in...

Weekly Planner: Week Seven

Another crop of two-start pitchers are examined in this week's planner

Interleague play fires up next week, and we have a star-studded slate of two-start pitchers to examine.  Last week, I gave the thumbs up to the back end of the Red Sox rotation, but both Daniel Bard and Felix Doubront flopped in Kansas City.  They could redeem themselves at home against Cleveland, but they move down a peg and need to prove something before being trusted again.

All of the other “starts” in both leagues have pitched adequately or better in their first outing of the week, including gems from Ivan Nova, Neftali Feliz, Doug Fister (listed as Duane Below in the piece, but then corrected to Fister in the comments), Edwin Jackson, and Jeff Samardzija.  Conversely, many of the National League “sits” did quite well themselves, especially Carlos Zambrano and Bronson Arroyo.  I’m still concerned about both in the long-term, however, and Alex White (the “Unnamed Colorado Starter” in the piece) did have the good fortune of debuting in San Diego.

Resident Fantasy Genius: Trades of Grey

4

Derek Carty

It can be hard to know this early what you have and what you need.

In recent weeks, I’ve discussed my stance on being aggressive early in the season, both in terms of FAAB bidding and in terms of trading.  Of course, there are different reasons for making a trade.  Ignoring the “making a trade for the sake of making a trade/being active/shaking things up,” which is never a good idea, there are two main reasons to make a trade: because you’re getting the better players or because you’re filling a need.

A number of readers have requested my advice on trades recently, with the conversation often starting something like, “I’m weak in Category A.”  Of course, stating with such certainty that you’re weak in a category when we’re just 19 percent of the way into the season is a tricky business. After all, there are a lot of games left to be played, and a lot of things can happen between now and October.  You don’t know how player performance will change, who will get injured, what trades may present themselves later in the year, who will come available on waivers, etc.

Value Picks: Starting Pitchers for 5/10/12

Paul Sporer

Paulino, Dickey, Zambrano, and Ogando make the VP cut this week

We have seen a shift in recent years with dwindling offensive output giving way to more dominant pitching. At one point or another, each of the last two years has been dubbed the “Year of the Pitcher,” and 2012 is on the same path (though Matt Kemp and Josh Hamilton may have something to say about that).  This can be seen as a boon to fantasy owners, as Value Picks remain plentiful.  Heck, just a cursory look at the top 10 starters in fantasy this season shows a handful of VP-types like Lance Lynn, Jake Peavy, and Jason Hammel.  In short, there will always be some arms out there being undervalued or on the cusp of breaking out.  Let’s take a look at this week’s list.

Value Picks: First, Third, and DH for 5/8/12

Looking for a replacement for your injured third baseman? Michael looks at plenty of hot-corner options this week, especially in Playing Pepper.

As Jason Collette and Paul Sporer covered in BP’s Towers of Power Fantasy Hour podcast this week, four front-line third-base qualifiers—Evan Longoria, Mat Gamel, Kevin Youkilis, and Pablo Sandoval—hit the DL this past week, leaving fantasy owners scrambling at an already-thin position. While many of the replacement players are marginal, sometimes a warm body is all you need to keep your fantasy squad afloat until more help arrives via an early-season callup. I’ll examine a few of those hot corner replacement options in this week’s column.

Fantasy Beat: Moore's Mess

3

Jason Collette

A look at Matt Moore's struggles this season, what the problem is, and what the outlook for the rest of 2012 is

Matt Moore has done one thing very well in 2012: remind everyone that he is a rookie. He was purchased in the low-teens in mixed league, upper-teens in AL-only leagues, and even as high as the eighth round in drafts. Despite the high praise fantasy drafters gave him, he is currently 1-2 with a 5.71 ERA and 5.15 FIP while walking 18 and striking out 28 in 34 2/3 innings of work.

Resident Fantasy Genius: Picking Up Saves In Anaheim

4

Derek Carty

Handicapping a very up-in-the-air ninth inning.

Well that was quick.  Barely a week after he was given the closer’s role in Anaheim, Scott Downs appears to be DL-bound after injuring his leg Sunday while avoiding a comebacker, leaving fantasy players scrambling to find his replacement.  Who that replacement will be, however, is currently up in the air.  Of course, that won’t stop us from speculating.  Today, I’ll try my hand at handicapping the situation.

The Yahoo! Friends & Family experts league is always an interesting barometer for this sort of thing.  It’s a daily transaction league, and any time a ninth-inning changing of the guard may be taking place, owners race to the waiver wire to pick up anyone with a chance for saves.  By yesterday evening, five Angel relievers had been picked up (if they weren’t already owned) in Yahoo! F&F: Downs, Jordan Walden, LaTroy Hawkins, Ernesto Frieri, and Jason Isringhausen.  Let’s take a look at the chance each has of saving games for the foreseeable future.

A look at Baseball Prospectus' new, fantasy-themed podcast

In case you do not peek at the blogs section on the front page or the revamped toolbar at the top, Baseball Prospectus has a new podcast for fantasy baseball! Paul Sporer may be a new addition to the staff, but he is a long-time friend of mine, so I could think of nobody better to start the podcast with than someone I have written with, debated against, and have known for ten years.
