Prospect Profile: A Song of Ice and Dirt

2

David Lee

White Sox prospect Eddy Alvarez is a rare breed of two-sport athlete.

Eddy Alvarez’s career plans may seem chaotic, but it’s all part of a grand design that he continues to draw with precision.

In an era of specialization that sees children focus on one sport, sometimes as soon as they first pick it up, multi-sport athletes who carry that torch into their 20s are becoming increasingly rare. Alvarez takes it to even greater heights by through a pairing of two sports that seems almost unimaginable.

Scout John Tumminia brings baseball clinic to Kenya

Our good friend, White Sox pro scout John Tumminia, will be bringing his baseball clinic to Kenya this October. At least 500 students from the Kipkeino Primary School and others from the surrounding area will benefit from six instructors and one field administrator. But in order for John's mission to be a success, he needs our help.

The group is in need of baseball equipment donations, particularly gloves. Without the necessary equipment, these kids won't be able to experience John's goal to bring "the love of the game" to Africa. So if you have any old gloves laying around your house, or you want to purchase a new one for a good cause, please send your donations to:

Fantasy Freestyle: Not Dunn Yet

3

Jason Collette

After a dismal first two months, Adam Dunn righted his ship with a strong June, and he could be a fantasy asset the rest of the way.

As June became July yesterday, Adam Dunn’s numbers looked rather familiar. His batting average was once again below the Mendoza line, at .198, and he had 21 home runs through his first 312 plate appearances. A bit encouraging is that he had only struck out 95 times, putting him on pace to strike out about 50 fewer times than his league-leading 222 last season. He is also on a decent pace to hit 40 home runs for the seventh time in his career.

The move from the National League to U.S. Cellular Field was supposed to be one that would likely help Dunn’s offensive numbers, yet he has just a .187/.313/.401 slash line in 1,457 plate appearances on the South Side of Chicago. Quietly, as the White Sox continue to have a disappointing season, Dunn had his best June ever and his best single month since changing leagues. Dunn was so red-hot in June that his MLB.com player card has over 50 highlights of him either driving in runs or crossing the plate in June alone!

The fourth installment of a five-part series on the pressing questions confronting each team in 2013.

Today, we continue with a look at the group of six teams with the second-worst odds of winning at least a Wild Card. As a reminder, you can find links to our preview podcasts for each team here.

What is the life of a back-of-the-magazine crossword puzzle editor really like?

Did you ever wonder what goes through the mind of an editor of one of those back-of-the-magazine crossword puzzles? You know, those puzzles filled with, like, 15 clues all based around the name of, say, your favorite television show? Where the words intersect on one letter at most and the most complicated clue is "the dominant color of Superman's uniform"?

Well, I can't promise to know exactly what one of these editors might be thinking, but I bet I can give you the next best thing. In the back of the 2008 "Official Chicago White Sox Magazine" is a baseball-themed puzzle of that caliber. By taking a look at each clue, we should be able to get a good sense of what this mind-numbing job might be like. Let's see what we find!
