Ben and Sam discuss the three-way trade between the Mariners, A's, and Nationals and talk about whether Seattle was too fixated on adding power this offseason.
Ben and Sam discuss the rejected trade that would have made Justin Upton a Mariner.
Ben and Sam break down three trade rumors that surfaced over the weekend. What the partisan parts of the internet think Miami's young All-Star outfielder is worth.
Being a baseball rumormonger is a difficult job to do well. First, you spend years building a network of sources who can and will tell you interesting things about baseball teams. Even after you’ve collected your contacts, be prepared to put in long hours and work weekends to stay ahead of the story or be the first to break it. Don’t expect to sleep or be seen without a cell phone.
However, the job has its perks: attract a large enough following, and you can create your own stories. Slow news day? Pick a highly coveted player whom it might make some sort of sense for a team to trade. Ask an executive who works for that team if there’s any chance that said player might be moved. If the executive says the player won’t be traded under any circumstances, you have a story, or what passes for a story in the MLBTR/Twitter era. If the executive allows even the slightest sliver of a possibility that the player might be available, you have a story that lives a long time and begets a long line of other stories, like something
straight out of the Old Testament. What is he worth, and what might it take to trade for him? Which teams might match up? Will the team still be willing to trade him tomorrow, and the day after tomorrow? What about the day after that? Read the full article...

Was the Royals' strategy in their swap of Wil Myers and more prospects for James Shields and Wade Davis based on a broken windows theory?
Note: If you've already listened to today's episode of Effectively Wild, some of this may sound familiar.
If you think about it, the Royals and Rays, the two teams that completed a massive
prospects-for-pitchers trade on Sunday, are a lot alike. Both teams are among the have-nots of the American League, competing with payrolls in the mid-60-millions (last season). Neither one draws well—in the Royals’ case, because of all the losing and because Kansas City is small, and in the Rays’ case, because of all the past losing, the newness of the franchise, and the ugliness and location of the ballpark, where it’s almost impossible to catch a foul ball without some painful and/ or embarrassing consequence. To compensate for the lack of revenue, both teams try to draft, develop, and extend homegrown players as an alternative to paying for wins from free agents, and both have had among the finest farm systems in baseball for the past few seasons. The San Diego Padres have been major players this offseason, and teams in the NL West have been put on notice.
The Padres have been huge players so far this offseason, acquiring
, Brandon Kloess , A.J. Kirby-Jones , and Tyson Ross in trades, and signing free agents Wilfredo Boscan and Travis Buck . This has the potential to upset the balance of power in the National League West. Jason Marquis
Such are the problems when a
new ownership group comes in and starts flinging money like there's an endless supply of the green stuff. Drop enough Lincolns and other teams reflexively recoil in fear. It is impossible to deny the intimidation factor that accompanies such brash spending. Opponents feel deflated and stop trying to compete. This is great for the Padres, but think of the poor Dodgers and Giants to the north. What will become of them?

The Phillies could add a bat soon, the Dodgers probably aren't done spending, and information about the lead-up to the Royals-Rays blockbuster is coming to light.
A busy weekend gave way to a lethargic Monday: Apart from the Twins
reaching a two-year deal with , the transactions wire was completely dormant. As we await more action, here’s a glance at two recent developments and a look back at the lead-up to the weekend’s most polarizing trade. Kevin Correia
Phillies likely to land one of top three free-agent corner outfielders
Over the past seven days, the Phillies have acquired center fielder from Minnesota and third baseman Ben Revere from Texas, in an effort to revamp their lineup, which lost Michael Young and Hunter Pence in midseason trades. But Revere and Young combined for just eight home runs in 2012, all of them hit by the former Ranger, and considering that manager Shane Victorino ’s power bats are riddled with question marks, the Phillies still need to add some thump. A-ROD BRACES FOR SURGERY
“I am fully committed to a very hard road back. We've done it before in '09 and it was a great result, both on a personal level and on a team level, more importantly. I take it as a great challenge and I'm excited for the challenge.”

How will a major-league team’s manager affect your fantasy team’s stolen-base totals?
Major League Baseball clubs often pride themselves on being aggressive on the basepaths. While the scope of this article isn’t to examine whether this strategy helps win ballgames, we can say with absolute certainty that being aggressive on the bases is the favored approach among fantasy owners. Stolen bases can be difficult to come by, so finding unexpected sources of steals can make a big difference for a team looking to win a championship.
One way to come across such bargains is to look at players who are changing teams, going from one with a passive organizational philosophy to one with an aggressive philosophy.
Lots of teams claim to be aggressive, but as with most things in this game, you can’t always take people at their word or reputation. The remainder of this post cannot be viewed at this subscription level. Please click here to subscribe.
