Overthinking It: PECOTA's Projected Risers

2

Ben Lindbergh

Five hitters and five pitchers PECOTA expects to see big improvements from this year.

BP’s PECOTA projections arrived two weeks ago today, offering answers to two of the most common questions asked each spring: Which players are expected to make major improvements, and which are big risks to head downhill?

We’ll tackle five hitters and five pitchers whom PECOTA projects to make major gains today, then do the same for some of the biggest projected decliners tomorrow. One note: It doesn’t take PECOTA to tell you that a player like Troy Tulowitzki—who missed most of last season after left groin surgery—could be in line for a big bounceback with better health, so this list is restricted to people who played full seasons in 2012.

Playoff Prospectus: NLCS Game 4 Recap: Cardinals 8, Giants 3

4

Sam Miller

As it turns out, pitching from the stretch is not a panacea for what ails Tim Lincecum.

Guess the MLB.com headline!

Tim Lincecum returns to the rotation opposing Adam Wainwright in a matchup that's too close for PECOTA to call.

The Cardinals lost their best postseason hitter to a knee injury early in Game Three, but still came out on top, because his replacement socked a game-winning two-run homer in his first trip to the plate. Now, the Giants must win to avoid facing three consecutive elimination games for the second straight series. Here are the PECOTA odds and projected starting lineups for Game Four:

Playoff Prospectus: NLDS Game Four Recap: Giants 8, Reds 3

2

Sam Miller

The Giants finally score some runs, and even the series against the Reds.

There was a pretty good chance the Giants were going to lose on Tuesday. As you’ll recall, they had one hit through nine innings; they drew one walk; they scored because of a passed ball and an error; etc. They could have very, very easily lost on Tuesday. And if they had, Tim Lincecum’s season highlights would have looked like this:

If Oliver Perez can start in the postseason, surely Tim Lincecum can too.

The table below lists the worst regular-season performances by pitchers who made playoff starts in the wild-card era, ranked by park-adjusted ERA relative to league average (similar to ERA+, but tweaked a bit). League average is 100, twice the league average is 0, and 1.5 times the league average is 50. As you can see, I’ve added one starter (in bold) who isn’t yet in this group, but is probably about to be.

Google's biographic pictures of baseball players aren't always what you expect.

Recently, Google began putting short bios of prominent subjects at the top of search results. It's a nifty time saver if all you need to know is What Is Kreayshawn, or whether Angel Pagan switch-hits. There is usually a photo of the person, too. The photo, though, isn't always the most representative photo of the person. That's what normal companies would do. Not Google. Oh, no, not Google*.
