The Braves' three-month run of leading the National League East ends, along with other news and notes from around the major leagues.

It would have been the perfect time to be carrying a pin. As quiet as it was in the Braves' clubhouse on Tuesday night, there was really a strong possibility you could have actually heard it drop.

On the Beat: Building Something Special

The Athletics' young rotation is showing flashes of greatness along with other news and notes from around the major leagues.

Considering the Athletics were among the very first major-league teams to embrace sabermetrics, it is only fitting that manager Bob Geren believes he has found the formula for success. While Geren's formula is not mathematical in nature, the numbers of the byproduct are quite impressive.

The Orioles are 7-1 under Buck Showalter along with other news and notes from around the majors.

The team with the worst record in the major leagues at this time of the year is almost always lifelessly trudging toward the finish line. It is mailing the games in and counting down the days until the end of the season.

The Reds are in contention for the first time in a decade, along with other news and notes from around the major leagues.

Dusty Baker couldn't resist having a little fun with the reporters gathered around him. The Reds manager was asked Tuesday night how he planned to set up his starting rotation for next week's pivotal series against the Cardinals. Baker grinned then playfully did not answer the question.

Prospectus Q&A: Javier Lopez

2

David Laurila

The Pirates lefty reliever talks about his interest in and involvement with the MLBPA, among other topics.

Javier Lopez is more than a side-arming journeyman left-hander. The 33-year-old Pirates reliever is also a family man and a former player representative to the Major League Baseball Players Association with a degree in psychology. A native of San Juan, Puerto Rico, Lopez has made 390 big-league appearances, 47 this year.

On the Beat: Wednesday Update

Stephen Strasburg is simply dazzling in his big-league debut, plus other notes from around the majors.

It was nearly impossible to find the right words to describe Stephen Strasburg's major-league debut. To say the 21-year-old right-hander was dominant for the Nationals does not even begin to tell the story.

More research is needed before we can truly know the effects of sleep on player performance.

Last week, we talked about the effects of sleep (or lack thereof) on a player’s performance, and it was all nice and theoretical, and at the end, I mumbled something about how a brilliant researcher might, in the future, be able to come up with some way to quantify these sorts of things. Welcome to the future. (See what I did there?)

Baseball Therapy: Good Night, John Boy

A player's sleep hygiene can factor largely in how he performs and develops.

If there’s something I’ve grown to understand a little too well over the past few months, it’s the effects of sleep deprivation. Ten months ago, my wife and I were fortunate to welcome our beautiful baby daughter into the world… and I don’t think we’ve had a full night of sleep since. But perhaps I can take comfort in the fact that hundreds of other men share in my plight. Fellow dads? No, major leaguers. Now that we’ve started the season, let the sleep deprivation begin!

But did it demand a complete game as well?

I can't help but think that this World Series turned, and I mean in a big way, and we missed the sign. At about 8:18 p.m. last night, after CC Sabathia had energized the Yankee Stadium crowd by pitching out of a bases-loaded jam, Cliff Lee dispensed with Derek Jeter on three pitches suitable for framing: a fastball up and over the plate that Jeter hit foul into the stands over first base, then a curve down and in that Jeter tipped foul, and finally a changeup that Jeter swung through.

Prospectus Today: Rumble in the Bronx

The takeaway from the showdown between the Yankees and Red Sox is that it's time for the Fens men to get serious about their offense.

Over their last three games, Red Sox starters threw 20 innings, allowed three runs, and posted a 17/7 strikeout-to-walk ratio. When you're looking for a reason why they lost all three, we can comfortably excuse the rotation. Josh Beckett, Clay Buchholz, and Jon Lester did their jobs well, giving the team three quality starts and putting them in position to win all three ballgames.

With post-season play getting underway on college diamonds, we get that much closer to learning who's in and who's out.

The college game's postseason began in earnest across the nation last night, as conference tournaments kicked off their action from the Atlantic Ten to the Sun Belt, and from Honolulu to Trenton. With rainy season finally coming to a close in the north, it looks like we should have a clean weekend filled with baseball to carry us through to Selection Sunday. The road to the College World Series begins with regionals in one week, which will take us straight through to Omaha in June.
