Minor League Update: Games of May 9-11

3

Jeff Moore

Notes on prospects who stood out over the weekend, including Nationals righty Lucas Giolito and Astros outfielder Delino DeShields Jr.

Friday, May 9

Delino DeShields, OF, Astros (Corpus Christi, AA): 2-4, 2 R, 2 HR, K. By now, you’ve probably seen the photo of DeShields after he got hit in the jaw with a pitch. He returned to action on Friday in tremendous fashion with a pair of home runs, something he doesn’t normally contribute.

Minor League Update: Spring Training Games of March 24

Jeff Moore

Notes on prospects who stood out in Cactus and Grapefruit League play, including Marlins outfieler Jake Marisnick and Cardinals outfielder Stephen Piscotty.

  • Jake Marisnick, OF, Marlins: 2-4, 2B. Even rain in Jupiter and a delayed start to the afternoon couldn’t slow down Marisnick, who is now hitting .442 this spring. I’ll still argue that both he and Marcell Ozuna belong in Triple-A to start the season, but if he really was invited to camp to compete for a spot on the Opening Day roster, it’s hard to do much better than Marisnick has this month.

  • Stephen Piscotty, OF, Cardinals: 1-3, R. Piscotty finished strong in Double-A last season and is off to a hot start this spring before likely returning to Springfield. Piscotty is just a flat-out good hitter who controls the strike zone incredibly well. If the power develops, he could be extremely productive. Just don’t get caught in the group of people who think he’s better than Oscar Taveras. At least not yet.

  • Kyle Crick, Colin Moran, and Stephen Piscotty come off the board to kick off picks 57 through 98.

Continuing with the theme of less filler and more of the good stuff, let’s jump right in here. If you want to revisit the parameters of the draft, they are all in the initial post of the series. If you don’t, you may skip right over this:

Minor League Update: AFL Recap for Games of November 11

    0

    Jeff Moore

Notes on 12 prospects, including Athletics shortstop Addison Russell and Cubs right-hander Dallas Beeler.

Hitter of the Day: Addison Russell, SS, A’s (Mesa Solar Sox): 3-5, R, 2B, K. There were a few questions about Russell when he was drafted in 2012, but there are very few surrounding him now. Still shy of his 20th birthday, Russell has handled every assignment put in front of him to this point and is now hitting .307 in the AFL. The strikeouts are a little bit of a concern, but as long as he keeps producing, no one will notice.

Pitcher of the Day: Dallas Beeler, RHP, Cubs (Mesa Solar Sox): 5 IP, 5 H, 0 ER, 0 BB, 2 K. Coming off a start in which he allowed seven unearned runs, Beeler was strong on Monday, pounding the strike zone and generating weak contact.

Minor League Update: AFL Recap for Games of October 16

    1

    Jeff Moore

Notes on nine prospects, including Cardinals outfielder Stephen Piscotty and Astros right-hander Matt Heidenreich.

Hitter of the Day: Stephen Piscotty, RF, Cardinals (Salt River Rafters): 2-4, 2 R, 2B, 3B, BB. Piscotty continues to be red-hot this fall and put together another strong day. He now has three straight multi-hit games.

Pitcher of the Day: Matt Heidenreich, RHP, Astros (Peoria Javelinas): 3 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 3 BB, 4 K. It’s a slow day in the AFL when the pitcher of the day walked three batters, but Heidenreich did limit the damage by missing some bats and limiting the hits. It was actually an abnormal start for Heidenreich, who doesn’t usually rack up the strikeout numbers but typically has very good control.
