GMs are rolling some bones with some big-ticket risks, but are all of their plays worth it, or should some have walked away?

From behind the plate to around the horn, the top ten fantasy picks.

For those who missed last week's outfield rankings, the explanation of how these lists were created can be found there. With five positions to cover this time around, this is a meaty piece, so it's time to dive right in.

Prospectus Hit and Run: Tandemonium

0

Jay Jaffe

The Mets' big move creates the question: Where does a Pedro/Johan pairing rank all-time?

In terms of its current ramifications, I don't have a ton to say about the Johan Santana deal that hasn't already been said by my BP colleagues. The one thing I find most shocking is that three of the four players the Twins acquired were pitchers. Given their core competency of generating mid- and back-rotation starters, why Minnesota would settle for a pair of back-enders like Philip Humber and Kevin Mulvey, guys who likely won't wind up better than the already on-hand Kevin Slowey and Boof Bonser, is beyond me.

6-4-3: Value Over Jack Cust

0

Gary Huckabay

Replacement Value isn't something quite so fixed and abstract as some might posit.

There's a process to writing these pieces. I can't generally do things as quickly as most of the other writers here at BP; I used to be able to, but that's not a skill I managed to retain over time. However, one of the benefits of having a longer process in place is that I get a lot more feedback before the piece is published than I did previously; it's nice to have a few people who serve as crap detectors in the loop. If I'm overinflating something--as I'm wont to do to make a point--I find that out before it gets wide exposure. Similarly, if I'm making my most common error, which is failing to explain how I got from Point A to Point B, I hear that as well. But it's kind of like asking engineering to vet marketing copy. You might ask them just to review the technical specs to make sure everything's kosher, but they inevitably comment on other stuff, like the ad creative, or the overall communication strategy. In my experience, the worlds of these two groups don't mesh well together. Most technical people aren't really certain about what marketing people actually do, and most marketing people would prefer the technical folks stick to the technical stuff, and leave the marketing to those who know how to do it.

Schrodinger's Bat: The Baserunning Edition

Dan Fox

Dan runs down the 2007 leaderboards in baserunning metrics, and crowns a player who helped his team the most on the basepaths.

"Never trust a baserunner who's limping. Comes a base hit, and you'll think he just got back from Lourdes."

Dan examines where research on clutch hitting is now, and ranks the best in 2006.

Clutch hitting is one of those issues that just won't go away. Ever since Dick Cramer's famous study titled "Do Clutch Hitters Exist?" was published in the 1977 Baseball Research Journal there has been no end to the discussion of just what is and what isn't clutch hitting, and how it can or can't be measured.

Playoff Prospectus: Padres versus Cardinals

0

Dan Fox

Dan reviews the no-longer funny Padres and their bid to take down the somewhat more embarrassed Cardinals in a rematch from last season's playoffs.

Okay, so things aren't anywhere near that bleak. In fact, the rematch of these two division winners beginning Tuesday afternoon at PETCO Park should be much more compelling than the 2005 version, in which the 82-win Padres impersonated a playoff team on their way to a three-game thrashing at the hands of the 100-win Cardinals. The fact that these are two teams going in opposite directions of 2005 also adds to the fun.
