BP.com's original column launched in 1996, TA has been where Christina Kahrl ponders the implications of recent roster moves, their impact on managerial tactics or how they reflect organizational behavior. Plus a few too many references to things that have nothing to do with baseball.

Every Given Sunday: Winding Down

2

John Perrotto

Possible changes coming in the GM landscape, the Astros are irked, and Cubs players envy how the other half lives.

A few months ago, it appeared that there would be wholesale changes made among major league general managers in the offseason, but now that no longer seems to be such a certainty. One team that will definitely have a new GM in 2009 is the Phillies, as Pat Gillick has already announced that he is retiring at the end of the season. It is conceivable, though unlikely, that the Phillies could be the only team to change GMs.

Greg Maddux throws a gem as Derek watches the Giants and Dodgers duel.

Taking the Dodgers first, they've hit the top of the division after residing in the cellar just a little over two weeks ago, going on an 11 game streak which was broken on Wednesday in Colorado, followed by a three game winning streak coming into today's matchup. Let's take a look at how a few Dodgers have performed during this stretch (courtesy of Dave Pinto's Day by Day Database):

Fantasy Focus: Building a Fantasy Farm System

0

Jeff Erickson

Jeff wonders if fantasy owners should stock their farm system with young hitters or young pitchers.

Is the same true of a fantasy farm system? I've always believed so, and my experiences in keeper leagues have only reinforced that point of view. Take the RotoWire Staff League as an example. We now have three years under our belt, in an 18-team league where each team starts the year with a 10-man minor league roster. In those three years, I've drafted 19 minor leaguers (because some of those draftees were retained, I didn't have the full complement of 10 picks each season) and traded for three others:

Under The Knife: A Joe Valachi by Any Other Name...

0

Will Carroll

Will has more from the steroid rumor mill, plus injury updates on Chipper Jones, the Red Sox, and Adam Eaton, another nixed Jamie Moyer deal, and the first official shutdown of the year.

The story continues, however, with Congress jumping in again. As Palmeiro waits to see what one committee does with the information released to them, another is sending letters to MLB. The letter includes eight questions that would clear things up--for someone not paying attention. The answers are pretty well known for six of the eight questions, if not specifically then generally. The interesting stuff will come if, as some rumors are now saying, that Palmeiro is ready to play the part of Joe Valachi. Yes, there are rampant rumors going through clubhouses and press boxes across baseball, and yes, there's another name coming soon. Names don't solve problems.

The Red Sox make some minor moves, perhaps warming up for something bigger. The Braves get a lot healthier, as do the Padres. Plus, Al Leiter comes full circle.
