Future Shock: Projecting The Top 10

26

Kevin Goldstein

An early look at how the top of the draft might unfold in June.

Doing a mock draft in late April is a silly exercise, but it makes for a good construct to talk about some of the rumors swirling around the top of the upcoming first round, as well as some general directions, so let's look at the first 10 picks and just take a general temperature.

Checking the Numbers: SHINO-myte!

11

Eric Seidman

Those who switch-hit in name only make up a rare cadre all their own.

A few weeks ago I found myself engrossed in a Tommy Bennett article on the Braves and stumbled upon his usage of the term SHINO when describing Melky Cabrera. The acronym stands for Switch-Hitter-In-Name-Only, and refers to some hitters with 'S' or 'Both' under the Bats column on their player pages, and specifically the ones who might want to think about changing that status. They certainly switch, but they don’t offer much in the way of hitting. The term tickled my fancy, in part due to the fact that I’ve had an article on switch-hitters in my to-do queue for over a year now that was set to focus on those who consistently struggled from one side of the plate. Though the title of that shelved article involved Bobby Kielty and not this term; as we’ll see, maybe Kielty should have been included in the title.

Pat Venditte's Grapefruit League debut prompted a romp through the archives

It was only one inning and change in an exhibition game, but on Tuesday the Yankees finally got a good look at Pat Venditte, the ambidextrous reliever who has pitched for three of their lower minor league affiliates over the last two years. Drafted out of Creighton in the 20th round in 2008, Venditte has been regarded by the media simply as a curiosity, and even his own organization has treated him more as a suspect than a prospect. Nonetheless, He's done nothing but deliver the goods when asked, compiling dominating numbers — 1.53 ERA, 11.6 strikeouts per nine and 6.1 strikeout-to-walk ratio, against just 6.7 hits per nine — in an even 100 innings. Intrigued, manager Joe Girardi requested that the Yankees bring him along to the Braves camp for a command performance in a split-squad game. "I've wanted to see it all spring," said the Yankee skipper.

Future Shock: Future Top Dogs, NL

A look back and a look ahead to who could the top prosects in the senior circuit next year.

One of the most frequent questions I get, be it via e-mail, chats, or the comment sections in the articles, is which player on (insert team here) has the best shot at moving into the Top 101. That's a much different question from who is the best prospect not in the Top 101, as the focus need to move solely to growth potential. Building on last year's "Future Top Dogs" series, let's keep that category in this year's version, while also taking an honest look at last year's prognostications.

Playoff Prospectus: Dodgers vs. Phillies LCS

33

Jay Jaffe

A rematch of last season's pennant joust figures to be a much more interesting matchup... favoring who?

It's dj v all over again. For the second year in a row, the Phillies and Dodgers face off in the National League Championship Series. Last year, Charlie Manuel's club beat Joe Torre and company in five games en route to their first World Championship in 28 years, with the series turning on Matt Stairs' pinch homer off of Jonathan Broxton in the eighth inning of Game Four. This time, the Dodgers have the home-field advantage, having compiled the best record in the league and then swept the Cardinals in the first round in convincing fashion, shaking out of a brief slump which saw them lose a season-high five straight games between clinching a spot in the playoffs on September 26 and wrapping up the NL West flag on October 3. The Phillies shook off a late-season slump of their own to squeak by the Rockies in four games during their first-round matchup.

Future Shock: Venezuelan Winter League Preview

5

Kevin Goldstein

A look at the who's who of the first winter league to begin play down in Venezuela.

We interrupt our Arizona Fall League preview series to take a trip even further south, as the Venezuelan Winter League-or as it's knows to the locals, Liga Venezolana de Beisbol Profesional, begins play tonight. The political situation there, as well as fears of crime, has kept many teams from sending many American players there lately, but there are still a number of outstanding prospects who will get some more reps in when they go home for the winter.
