Every Given Sunday: Changing of the Guards

0

John Perrotto

Several managers and general managers have already been replaced this year. Here's the scoop on which of those remaining could lose their job in the offseason.

Four managers and three general managers have failed to make it through the season.

Every Given Sunday: Settling into the Stretch

0

John Perrotto

If you could sit down and watch a bit of every playoff race, where would you go? John's the man with a plan. Plus records, rumors, and more.

Jim Leyland has always insisted that the pennant races don't begin until August 15th. While Leyland has never given a definitive reason for why he has arbitrarily picked that date, the Tigers' manager understands pennant races, having lead Pittsburgh to three straight division titles from 1990-92 back when the Pirates still mattered, guided the Florida Marlins to the World Series title in 1997, and taken the Tigers to the World Series last year.

The roller coaster career of the Pirates' power source.

From relative unknown to National League star to disappointment, Jason Bay has been all over the value spectrum during his short career. A late-blooming Canadian-born player, he has shown signs of an early decline, which does not bode well for the Pirates' already difficult outlook. Today we will look at potential sources of Bay's 2007 slump, as well as his long-term prospects.

Prospectus Matchups: Midweek Miscellany

Jim Baker

Jim proposes reworking an egregious bit of baseball slang, examines a pair of 19th century foes, and advances an offensive equivalent to the quality start.

The Pirates are one of baseball's most inept franchises. Does the small market excuse carry any weight?

Of course, Pittsburgh is a small market club. The real question is how small relative to the other markets. Here's a revised and updated version of the population section of the "Take to Your Beds!" table:

Prospectus Matchups: Feels Like the First Time

0

Jim Baker

Houston will take the field Saturday night in their first World Series. Jim takes a look at the history of teams playing in their first Fall Classic.

Boston (A) vs. Pittsburgh, 1903: The first three World Series, as one could probably assume, featured opponents who had never been there before. Pittsburgh prevailed in the very first such game of the 20th Century, 7-3. This game featured one of the more miserable World Series Game One first innings ever suffered by a team. Cy Young gave up three hits, his mates logged three errors and the Pirates, Honus Wagner included, stole two bases while jumping to a 4-0 lead that they never surrendered.

The Marlins' defense has been historically good, the Yankees' defense has been historically bad, and the Pirates need to check out of the W Hotel.

  • Foiled Again: BP's Neil deMause called it first: The Marlins' latest bid for a taxpayer-funded stadium died an ugly death at the hands of the Florida State Senate last week. It's not a huge surprise or even a huge shame, except to the extent that ownership visits to Las Vegas, Portland, San Juan, Mexico City, and Kuala Lumpur might distract from a terrific season by South Florida's ballclub.

Signings, signings and more signings. Well, a minor trade, too.

The Marlins flirt with Las Vegas, the Yankees fool around with some questionable free agents and the Pirates go all the way with the A's.
