Dissecting the Draft: Introduction

15

Nick J. Faleris

The first installment of a new series, in which a member of our prospect team will step into the Red Sox' shoes and conduct a shadow draft.

Creating a Mechanism for Evaluation of Draft Strategy

Part of what drew me to Baseball Prospectus, other than my respect for Jason Parks and his vision of a scouting-department-style “Prospect Team,” was the allure of stepping into a ready-made readership eager and able to help me explore baseball on both a macro and micro level. As far as the draft is concerned, that means not only breaking down draft prospects from a scouting perspective on a player-by-player basis, but also working to understand what goes into formulating an overarching approach to player acquisition through the draft. This includes general strategies relating to draft acquisitions, as well as draft-class-specific game planning.

Wait 'Til Next Year: Horned Frogs, Riding High

12

Bryan Smith

Is this the best TCU team yet? Plus matchups and early-season weekend showdowns from the college game.

When coach Jim Schlossnagle leaves Fort Worth, dominance in the Mountain West Conference notwithstanding, the caliber of pitchers that have passed through Texas Christian University is likely to be his most important legacy. Consider that in the last four June amateur drafts the Horned Frogs have seen six pitchers taken in the first five rounds. In 2005, Lance Broadway became the school's first-ever first-round pick, a feat duplicated last year by Andrew Cashner. In 2007, ace Jake Arrieta fell to the fifth round before signing for first-round money.

Wait 'Til Next Year: College Knowledge

3

Bryan Smith

Jump into an evaluation of the top programs in the country as Bryan ranks the NCAA Top 25.

This spring, while I continue to search for new ways to cover college baseball, I will nevertheless do one traditional exercise for anyone on this beat by ranking the national landscape to provide you with my own top 25 list. Yet, as I spent the offseason searching for the best schools to fill out the list and the best way to organize them, I began to see a few clear separations. More than specific rankings, there are what I see as relatively clear-cut tiers. Six programs stood out as the cream of the crop, 12 more are schools that are just a break or two away from contention, and after that initial 18 the final seven that make up my list are interchangeable with the bevy of near-misses that I'm sure will gain consideration or make it onto the list at some point during the season.

Wait 'Til Next Year: Back to School

0

Bryan Smith

This year, some college programs suddenly found themselves with holes on their roster before the school year even began.

At various points on last Wednesday, the draft's signing deadline day, Mike Moustakas was going to USC, and Matt Wieters was supposedly returning to Georgia Tech. At different times, both Rick Porcello and Madison Bumgarner were all but packed to head to Chapel Hill. Jack McGeary was, without question, going to continue Stanford's decade-long streak of bringing commits to Palo Alto.
