Dee Gordon hits his first home run, two bench players push the limits of bad batting, Chris Davis keeps hitting, Clay Hensley exposes the unearned run, Derek Jeter hits cleanly in three of his five at-bats (or does he?), and more.

Five things I wanted to write about happened in last night’s games, but none of them was substantial enough on its own for an article. The solution: drop all five unrelated observations (plus a few more for good measure) into the same article draft and call it a column. Trick of the trade.

Derek Jeter goes 3-for-5 and gets accused of steroid use by this one guy I talked to
I live in a baseball discourse bubble.

Playoff Prospectus: Kotsay it Ain't So

8

Jay Jaffe

Jim Leyland wasn't alone in making questionable lineup moves on Wednesday; Ron Roenicke made his own in playing Mark Kotsay.

Sometimes a manager plays a hunch and winds up looking smart, even if the process by which he arrives at the decision appears flawed. In Game Five of the AL Division Series, Jim Leyland batted light-hitting utilityman Don Kelly second, and Kelly responded with a solo home run in the first inning en route to a 3-2 Tigers victory and a series win. On the other hand, sometimes a manager makes a head-scratching move, and it backfires so badly it raises the question of whether a best-of-seven series can end in three games. In Game Three of the NL Championship Series, Ron Roenicke chose to start Mark Kotsay in center field and bat him second against Cardinals ace Chris Carpenter. Before the first inning was out, Kotsay wound up on the wrong end of two game-changing plays en route to a 4-0 deficit, and while the Brewers made a game of it, they fell 4-3, putting themselves in a two-games-to-one hole with the possibility that the series may not make it back to Milwaukee.

Overthinking It: A Google Gallimaufry

8

Ben Lindbergh

Grudzielanek's goodbye, and some of the week's other more elusive headlines.

Today, instead of Overthinking™ one particular topic—since I’ve already done enough of that this week—I thought I’d take a page out of FJM's book and offer up a gallimaufry inspired by headlines that caught my eye recently as they made their way through my Google Reader baseball news feed (skipping lightly over Rotoworld’s “Punto having groin looked at by specialist,”* to which I have nothing to add). We'll take them topic by topic, and if some of you enjoy the exercise, maybe I’ll do this again sometime.

*That doesn't even come close to qualifying as my favorite unintentionally humorous Rotoworld headline. In fact, it may not even be the best one about groins. (“Hunter hears good news about pop in groin” deserves to be in the conversation.) The best I've seen are “Carpenter complains of slick balls in Cinci” and “Blalock not interested in Minors,” and yes, those have stuck in my head since last season. If you’re not subscribed to the Rotoworld feed, you’re missing out, and I don’t mean on the news.

BP Unfiltered: Kotsay Finds a New Home

1

R.J. Anderson

The veteran is close to joining his seventh organization.

An easy way to diagnosis the velocity of the news cycle is by how much discussion the signing of a blasé veteran creates. In Mark Kotsay’s case, too much talk for the product. The ever-trustworthy Ken Rosenthal suggests Kotsay and the Brewers are near an agreement for a one-year pact. The Brew Crew will have to remove someone from their full 40-man roster since the deal is of the major-league variety.
