On the Beat: Of MVPs and Legacy Awards

7

John Perrotto

WARPed statistical viewpoints, 57.2 percent of first-place votes despite one no-vote, and news and notes from around the major leagues.

Getting Albert Pujols to talk about his personal statistics can be a difficult task. The Cardinals' first baseman will modestly reply with such tried-and-true phrases as, "the only statistic I care about is the team winning," or "I'll look at my numbers once I'm done playing." However, Pujols did talk about his numbers on Monday, after he had won his second National League Most Valuable Player award.

Prospectus Hit and Run: Penning a New Recipe

0

Jay Jaffe

The Rays' relief rebound ranks as the most profound pen improvement on record.

You wouldn't know it given the way that their bullpen pitched at times during the latter portion of the American League Championship Series, but the Rays likely wouldn't have reached this year's World Series without the remarkable turnaround achieved by that unit. By a couple of measures, the performance of the Tampa Bay bullpen qualifies as historically significant.

There are times when all of the clear thinking in the world can't seem to explain what just happened.

The Sox played their way into October with two dramatic wins this week, while the Rays won their division with six dramatic months. Who holds the advantage?

Each year, the White Sox graciously host a University of Chicago alumni event, where Christina Kahrl and I speak to 150 or more nerds in the U.S. Cellular Conference & Learning Center. The group gets tickets to the game too-which usually means a contest against the Orioles or the Royals, or perhaps a thrilling interleague tilt against the Pirates; clubs that don't motivate many Chicagoans to give up an afternoon from their short summers to come out to the ballpark.

Schrodinger's Bat: The Biggest Booms and Busts?

0

Dan Fox

Dan invests a bit of time to come up with something pretty authoritative on the subject.

"The present is never our goal: the past and present are our means: the future alone is our goal. Thus, we never live but we hope to live; and always hoping to be happy, it is inevitable that we will never be so."
--Blaise Pascal

Lies, Damned Lies: Offseason Plans, AL West

0

Nate Silver

Turning to baseball's short-stack division, where there's an increasing divergence between the Angels and the other three teams.

This is the third of a six-part preview of the impending offseason. Today, we cover the AL West, because it's kind enough to have only four teams, none of whom remain in the playoffs.
