On the Beat: Adrian as Advertised

7

John Perrotto

A recent offensive skid only serves to remind Red Sox fans of how well their team has hit after acquiring Adrian Gonzalez over the offseason.

Even though the Red Sox snapped their four-game losing Sunday with a 4-2 win over the Pirates at PNC Park in Pittsburgh, they managed just six hits in the game and have scored just 14 runs in their last five games. While fans of most teams wouldn't worry about a small cold spell, the Fenway faithful are alarmed, which is understandable given that the Bosox had just completed a stretch of 16 games in which they won 14 and averaged an amazing 8.0 runs a game.

On the Beat: Rebuilding the Astros

4

John Perrotto

Jim Crane says he hopes to restock Houston with youth once he buys the team. Can first baseman Brett Wallace be part of the solution?

It seems $680 million only goes so far these days.

Mike Aviles is in danger of being supplanted by the Royals' wave of young talent, but he says he still hopes to play a role on the next Kansas City winner.

The Royals' future has already started arriving. Two weeks ago, first baseman Eric Hosmer was called up from Triple-A Omaha after terrorizing the Pacific Coast League, and the 21-year-old hasn't disappointed, hitting .242/.333/.515 with a .297 True Average in his first 39 plate appearances. Today, left-hander Danny Duffy will be called up from Omaha to start for the Royals tonight against the Rangers in Kansas City.

The Nationals are hoping shortstop Danny Espinosa can be a building block of their young squad.

All 30 of us on the Baseball Prospectus staff made our pre-season predictions in the days leading up to Opening Day. Two categories where I veered far off course from my colleagues were the American League East and National League Rookie of the Year.

On the Beat: Spring Surprises

15

John Perrotto

A team-by-team rundown of players who've exceeded expectations this March.

After initially writing Wednesday that I would look at each team's biggest disappointments of the spring in this column, I've shaken off the catcher and decided to throw the changeup. Instead of ruining that warm and fuzzy feeling we created just two days ago, I've instead decided to look at a player from each of the 30 major-league teams who has been a pleasant surprise during spring training:

Fantasy Beat: Keeping Scoresheet

24

Rob McQuown

Rob McQuown kicks off the Scoresheet Baseball season with some basic tips and help with keeper decisions.

Welcome to the kickoff of BP Scoresheet! The “cuts” deadline for most leagues is coming up soon, and the Scoresheet forums are buzzing with titles including the words “protect” and “keeper” and “draft”. And with only 13 keepers available in most leagues, these are some tough decisions.

But first, what is Scoresheet Baseball, why is it included under “BP Fantasy”, and how can insights into Scoresheet help in other fantasy baseball contexts?

On the Beat: Wedge Issues

5

John Perrotto

A new skipper looks forward to trying to turn around the Mariners, plus with other news and notes from around the majors.

Eric Wedge spent seven seasons as the Indians' manager from 2002-08, compiling a 561-573 record and winning the American League Manager of the Year Award in 2007 when his team got within one game of the World Series. However, Wedge was fired at the end of the 2009 season when the Indians fell to 65-97.

Prospectus Q&A: Bob Kipper

2

David Laurila

Red Sox minor-league pitching coach Bob Kipper recalls his major-league playing experiences.

Before he became a highly-regarded minor-league pitching coach, Bob Kipper lived the dream that he now helps others pursue. The 46-year-old erstwhile left-hander spent eight seasons in the big leagues, and while his record was humble—27-37 with a 4.34 ERA and 11 saves—he considers himself privileged to have simply earned the opportunity. Taken eighth overall in the 1982 draft by the California Angels, Kipper was traded to Pittsburgh three years later and logged the bulk of his 247 career appearances with the Pirates. He has been a pitching coach in the Red Sox organization since 1999, and he spent the 2010 season mentoring hurlers in Double-A Portland.
