As part of Perfect Game's partnership with Baseball Prospectus, David Rawnsley, Todd Gold and Patrick Ebert will be conducting a “Before They Were Pros” series, providing scouting reports on some of the top prospects in baseball from when they were in high school attending PG events. This six-part series (one for each division in MLB) will appear once Baseball Prospectus has provided their own detailed scouting reports of the top prospects, team-by-team, as part of their “Prospects Will Break Your Heart” series.

Minor League Update: Games of Thursday, August 15

5

Zach Mortimer

Notes on 17 prospects, including Braves lefty Lucas Sims and Mariners outfielder Jabari Blash.

Pitching Prospect of the Day: Lucas Sims, RHP, Braves (Low-A Rome): 7.0 IP, 1 H, 0 ER, 2 BB, 9 K. Sims offers a mature arsenal for a 19-year-old: a potential plus fastball, a plus curveball, and a solid-average changeup. Sims has a feel for pitching and still has a solid mid-rotation; 47.2 IP, 29 H, 17 ER, 22 BB, 52 K in last nine starts.

Position Prospect of the Day: Jabari Blash, RF, Mariners (Double-A Jackson): 3-4, 2 HR, 3 R, 3 RBI, BB, K. The book on Blash has not changed much; he still has easy plus power, a plus arm, and average running ability. And, yes, the ultimate future still hinges on whether Blash can make the necessary adjustments to sustain an adequate contact rate.

Minor League Update: Games of Monday, June 10

Zach Mortimer

Javier Baez's four-homer night stole the show, but plenty of prospects enjoyed their Monday.

Pitching Prospect of the Day: Lucas Sims, LHP, Braves (Low-A Rome): 6.0 IP, 3 H, 1 ER, 0 BB, 7 K. Well, well well, another Braves pitcher with a major-league future. The Braves started the season by using Sims in relief to keep his innings down, but since being placed back in a starting role, Sims has flourished. Sims has everything you would want in a young pitcher: a plus fastball, a potential plus curveball, and a developing changeup that has a solid-average. 19.1 IP, 16 H, 6 ER, 5 BB, 26 K in his last four starts

Despite some holes in the system, the Braves have an exciting group of arms.

Raising Aces: Draft Day Deliveries, Part Two

3

Doug Thorburn

Evaluating the mechanics of six pitchers chosen in the middle of the first round of this year's draft.

After a pitcher-heavy run to round out the top 10 picks of the 2012 First-Year Player Draft, MLB clubs took a rest, with just two of the next 10 selections hailing from the mound. The roller-coaster ride continued with four consecutive arms chosen from picks 19 through 22, followed by a seven-pick drought before wrapping up with a pair of pitchers to close out the first round. Today's edition will cover the six-pack of pitchers who were taken in the middle of the round, a stretch that includes all right-handed hurlers, though today's group does involve a healthy mix of prep pitchers and college-trained arms.
