Transaction Analysis Special

The notable moving and shaking that's been going on.

Chicago White Sox
Acquired SS-R Orlando Cabrera and cash from the Angels for RHP Jon Garland. [11/19]
Designated OF-L Scott Podsednik for assignment. [11/20]
Signed RHP Scott Linebrink to a four-year, $19 million contract; gave Podsednik and INF-S Alex Cintron their unconditional releases. [11/28]

Oops. In itself, the deal with the Angels isn't a bad thing, it's just that it doesn't fit in very well with the initial decision to keep Juan Uribe for $4.5 million, and there's the irony that the exchange might have also encouraged the Halos to upgrade on Gary Matthews Jr. and go get the center fielder Kenny Williams so clearly wanted for his own club.

Willie Randolph gets his, while Kenny Williams learns the value of a good lie.

"Going into the season we didn't know how things would end up. Obviously I was on the middle of the contract. As the season went on, you have 3.5 million people coming out and they're talking a new ballpark, and SNY was doing well, you start thinking about sharing some of the wealth, of course."
--Mets manager Willie Randolph, who got a raise from the Mets this week (Mike and the Mad Dog, WFAN.com)

Kenny Williams loves it when a plan comes together, Bud Selig is immortalized as the Street and Smith's Executive of the Year, and the Giles brothers are back together.

"Baseball under Bud Selig's leadership has done in one calendar year what for most people would be a great career."
--Fox Sports president Ed Goren, on Bud Selig.

Thank the Winter Meetings for encouraging all of Major League Baseball to forget the age-old maxim, "loose lips sink ships."

"We have sent a formal offer to Matsuzaka and his agent Scott Boras. I believe it is fair and comprehensive, and offers a great deal of security and a substantial level of compensation."
--Red Sox executive Larry Lucchino

The White Sox win the World Series, the Astros wait until next year, Ozzie Guillen lives in a man's world, and Paul DePodesta is fired in L.A.

"In sports, I haven't had a greater feeling."

If it's All-Star week, why is everyone so unhappy? Johnny Damon, Ozzie Guillen, Frank Robinson, the Yankees and David Newhan all show a little displeasure in this negativity-filled edition of The Week in Quotes.

"It certainly hasn't changed our thinking in terms of acknowledging the record should he return and eventually surpass the record. But any additional promotional sponsorships regarding that record chase would involve the player, the club, Major League Baseball and our corporate sponsors. And those would not go into the discussion phase until he was closer to the record."
--MLB director of marketing communications Kathleen Fineout, on how MLB will market Bonds should he resume the chase for the home run record (Washington Post)

Carlos Beltran vs. Bernie Williams

The one that sticks in my head three weeks later? "Beltran or Bernie Williams at his peak?" I haven't wanted to call a time out on television too often, but if I could have paused the segment there to do some research, I would have. I ended up choosing Beltran at the time, for his defensive edge and the runs he creates on the bases, but it was a weak call. I just wasn't sure, and I guess that makes it a great question.

One Man is an Island

Not that he need to stand out further, but here's one more way that Barry Bonds is unique among the greatest players in baseball history.

There is less to this morsel of information than meets the eye. Bonds is near the end of his career, playing alongside teammates who are still in the early stages or primes of their own. By the looks of the current Giants roster not many of them are true Hall of Fame candidates, but isn't it a bit early to rule out Jason Schmidt? That's to say nothing of the possibility that a single acquisition by Brian Sabean might erase this morsel from the books in short order. What if the Giants, in need of a first baseman, trade for Rafael Palmeiro, or take a flier on Mike Piazza as the Mets hold a fire sale? What if he can manage to wrest Randy Johnson from the Diamondbacks? Any one of these moves would give Bonds a teammate with whom he'll eventually share a stage in the midsummer sun of upstate New York.

It's not that Bonds hasn't had quality teammates over the years; 2000 NL MVP Jeff Kent and one-time Maris-busting threat Matt Williams come to mind. Which of Bonds' teammates have the best cases for the Hall of Fame?
