Skewed Left: The Uptons in April

0

Zachary Levine

B.J. Upton is off to a slow start, while Justin Upton is on fire. But are they really that different from 2012?

If baseball players really are just like us—hint: they’re not; they’re way more amused by remote control cars than any of us over age seven are—then the Upton family is just like the Levine family.

Not in the sense of anything related to baseball ability or the older brother’s badass initials, but in the way time works and an age gap that tends to be neutralized.

Overthinking It: If I Had My Brothers

3

Ben Lindbergh

Surprise: the Upton-inspired brothers-helping-brothers theory has some support in the numbers.

B.J. and Justin Upton are brothers. They’re also both Braves, thanks to the November signing that brought B.J. to Atlanta and the trade last week in which Justin joined him. As one would expect, the Uptons are excited about the opportunity to be big-league teammates, which they’ve been hoping to have for years. Here are some quotes from a couple of the many stories written about the Uptons in the wake of the trade:

Overthinking It: Why Justin Upton is Always About to Be Traded

6

Ben Lindbergh

It's a lot of fun to talk about Justin Upton being traded, which might be why reporters talk about it so much, and it might be why Kevin Towers talks about it so much.

At this point, it sort of seems as though Justin Upton has always been available, as if he was born on the trading block or at least debuted there before he made the majors. Upton trade rumors are as much an annual offseason ritual as Scott Boras’ binders, debates about Aroldis Chapman’s role, or worries about whether the Marlins are bad for baseball. He hasn’t actually been traded yet, not even once, but we’ve grown used to Upton existing in a perpetual state of about-to-be-dealt.

Difficult as it might be to believe, it’s been less than 2 ½ years since Upton was at the opposite end of the availability spectrum: untouchable. On March 3, 2010, the Diamondbacks signed Upton to a six-year, $51.25 million extension that runs through 2015. Just over three months later, on June 13, Nick Cafardo included this in the notes section of his column for the Boston Globe:

Resident Fantasy Genius: The Ones We Got Wrong

3

Derek Carty

Derek goes over his preseason predictions looking for mistakes.

Last week in this space I looked back on my best preseason predictions.  While I think my hits far outweighed my misses, it is important (and fair) to look back at the lesser advice I gave this year.  For each player, I’ve listed his mixed and AL/NL-only auction value in Tout Wars and LABR (only Tout has a mixed auction, but AL/NL-only values are an average of Tout and LABR) as well as his actual value for the 2012 season according to our Player Forecast Manager. Also take note that I’ve excluded most of the “value picks” from my preseason tier articles, as they’ll get their own review article.

Justin Upton
Mixed:
$40/$21
NL-only: $38/$27
