Prospectus Today: Low-End Free Agents

0

Joe Sheehan

Teams looking to avoid sticker shock still have ways to help themselves this winter.

I have pretty much the same opinion of the 2007-08 class of free agents as I did about the last two classes, with the exception that this class includes one of the greatest players in baseball history. If you can sign Alex Rodriguez, you do so; he's worth somewhere around the $30 million a year he's supposedly asking for to a team that's on the brink of contention right now. His decline phase may well be worth that kind of money as well, given where the marginal value of a win is headed, and the additional revenues that Rodriguez can generate as he chases down some of the game's most hallowed records.

Wait 'Til Next Year: Success at Altitude

Bryan Smith

Running down some of the long-term decisions that have helped create Colorado's recent success.

Colorado's eight-game win streak has propelled the team into contention and created one of the most positive seasons in the organization's existence. One of the accompanying narratives is that they are learning how to win in Coors Field. Another is the declining park factor in Colorado has allowed for a more stable pitching staff. While there is some truth to these, for me the Rockies are more than the product of an evolving ballpark-related dynamic. Rather, they are a perfect case study in proper player development.

Wait 'Til Next Year: Minor League Leadoff Hitters, Ranked

0

Bryan Smith

Which low-level table-setters have the requisite statistical profiles to be projected as successful major league leadoff men?

Every June, the minor leagues are flooded with a new group of small, fast, up-the-middle players. Scouting directors take flyers on leadoff types in droves annually, and all the players have one thing in common: speed. However, the success rate of these players is especially poor, so over two previous articles, I have explored the traits beyond speed that good leadoff hitters have shown most often in the minor leagues. The quick five:

A reminder for those in the D.C. area, plus updates on Carlos Beltran, Kenny Rogers, James Loney, Russell Martin, Garret Anderson, and Eric Chavez.

No time for an introduction, but a quick reminder that today is the last day to buy tickets for the BP Event in D.C. It's very close to capacity already, and I hope to see many of you there. I'll also be at Jamey Newberg's event in Arlington in a couple weeks, and tickets are going fast for that--check Jamey's website for details.

Under The Knife: NextGen

Will Carroll

Will talks about the evolution of BP Radio, plus he provides updates on Rickie Weeks, Carlos Beltran, Jason Giambi, and more.

It's the end of an era. This weekend will be the last Baseball Prospectus Radio as we've known it for the past five seasons. It will be one heck of a final show--Frank Deford, one of my writing heroes, talks about his timely new novel, Buzz Bissinger discusses Kerry Wood in a new article in this weekend's New York Times titled "Play," and Al Roker talks about producing a new series about making to "The Show." The idea that we could have that kind of guest list in any month, let alone a single show, means that BPR has exceeded every single expectation I had for it.
