Baseball Prospectus' long-running pick-the-worst fantasy game is back for 2014 after taking a few seasons off.

UPDATE: We've upgraded the scoring logic of HACKING MASS to better fit the times, and changed the deadline to give you more time (April 14). The new ESPN calculation is below.

HACKING MASS, our competition to pick the least dangerous hitters and least effective pitchers in the majors, returns for the 2014 season! You can field your team and put yourself in the running for $100, a lifetime Baseball Prospectus Premium subscription, or one of nine one-year BP Premium subscriptions by clicking here. Registration is open to anyone with a Baseball Prospectus account, including Basic accounts, which are free to create. You'll have a full week to enter (the deadline is April 14, 2014, at midnight PST), but it's easy to change players, so feel free to go all in on Darwin Barney on the entry form today, then switch to Ryan Goins Monday morning. But once the deadline arrives, partial teams will be dropped and new entries and changes will no longer be allowed.

Brad Ausmus may have fallen short of the World Series, but he was an integral part of this year's HACKING MASS champion.

No matter what rooting interest you have, though, one thing ties us all together: that we could have had our own free HACKING MASS team this year. This year's competition attracted more than 1,300 competitors, most of whom attacked their Bizarro General Manager job description with gusto. If you don't know what HACKING MASS is, take a look at this year's Rules; we'll wait.

Now, let's break down this year's results.

2003 HACKING MASS Results

The 2003 HACKING MASS All-Star team is a fetching mixture of the young and the old; the highly-regarded defensively with a sprinkling of butchers thrown in; members of good teams and members of awful ones. Elderly Astros catcher (and recipient of a brand-new two-year contract) Brad Ausmus, young Dodgers glove merchant Cesar Izturis, Most Valuable Player and Texas Ranger Colby Lewis, and Blue Jay starter Cory Lidle, who missed his traditional second-half stretch of high-octane pitching, all scored in the triple digits. White Sox first baseman Paul Konerko, Orioles third baseman Tony Batista, Expos center fielder Endy Chavez, Athletics right fielder Jermaine Dye, and Lewis and Lidle were all selected for fewer than five HACKING MASS squads. A perfect roster was worth 937 points in 2003.

Terrible performance and tons of playing time has made Endy Chavez a giant drag on the Expos' offense. The off-season's Ortiz-for-Moss deal wasn't as bad as you think for the Giants. Kevin Cash is the latest catcher-of-the-future for the Blue Jays. These and other news and notes out of Montreal, San Francisco, and Toronto in today's Prospectus Triple Play.

  • Hackin' Endy: For a few years now, Baseball Prospectus has put together a game called HACKING MASS. As the game's rules page explains:
