Preseason Value Picks: First, Third, and DH for 3/20/12

Michael looks at Value Picks to be found in the first-base battles in Cleveland and Pittsburgh

Part of the excitement of Spring Training is watching Opening Day rosters take shape—usually, this involves whether a top prospect will start the year in the minors or which utility man grabs the final bench spot. Less often, we get to watch two players compete for the right to start, an especially important choice at the power position of first base. While both Cleveland and Pittsburgh seems to have made their choices at the cold corner, there are still some other options that could rise to the challenge and bring value to their fantasy owners.

The tater trots for August 2: five multi-home run games and a couple of notable shots in the Cubs game. The home run call for Jose Reyes' shot is something special.

Yesterday, I made a special note of the four multiple home run days hit across the league on Monday. Well, if four was special on Monday, then the five on Tuesday must be even more special. Of course, there were forty-two home runs hit in total on Tuesday as opposed to the twenty-six on Monday, so maybe that dilutes it somehow. I doubt Ryan Howard, Alfonso Soriano, Garrett Jones, Mark Teixeira, and Omar Infante would care, though.

Do early-season phenoms fade once the rest of the league learns to stop giving them pitches to hit?

The Braves and Pirates make a flurry of moves, but they weren't the only ones wheeling and dealing on July 31.

Pirates right fielder Garrett Jones has an opener to remember.

Garrett Jones came out of nowhere to hit 21 home runs in 84 games as a 28-year-old rookie with the Pirates last season. Because he spent 11 seasons in the minor leagues, including five at Class AAA, it was easy to think the right fielder could disappear this season just as easily as he burst on to the scene in 2009.

Transaction Action: More Prospect Wipeout!

4

Christina Kahrl

No Bowdens, Bumgarners, or Flowers a-blooming, not even the sound of Mike Stanton's bat booming.

The fact that the Sox shipped out the other Ramon Ramirez (cue Scooby-Doo, it's "Ram-Ruh!?") shouldn't surprise, and like Bates, the organizational soldier, he's among the likelies as far as who gets bumped from the 40-man by any subsequent decisions to add veteran relievers Joe Nelson and/or Brian Shouse. (And perhaps Alan Embree later still.) But rain falls on the prospect-y as well as those less so, as Bowden's fate and a third return to Pawtucket reflects. In any one of a number of second-division camps, Bowden would be vying for a rotation slot after spending most of the last three years at Double-A or higher. Considering that he's only 23 years old and that he's got a low-90s fastball and a good changeup, it's not like he's the next David Pauley. The challenge is to see if he tightens up his breaking stuff to the point that he becomes a better prospect, or if, failing that, he has to eventually head to the pen, where he could still be an asset. Whether he succeeds or fails, his real problem as far as making it back to The Show and sticking around is the organization he has to call daddy. The Red Sox have little space for the middling or not-quite-ready to help them in their quest for a playoff slot, with six solid starters already available to staff the big-league rotation, plus multi-year commitments to five of them (excepting free agent-to-be Josh Beckett), and with Junichi Tazawa already apparently hop-skotching past him on the organizational depth chart. Bowden's best bet is to knock the socks off people's paws as a PawSock, and see if that makes him an in-season fill-in or a Pittsburgh Pirate by August.

After drawing the ire of MLB and the MLBPA, the Marlins reel in one of their big fish, and arbitration cases continue to be solved.

Fantasy Focus: Third Base Rankings Review

29

Marc Normandin

In a process to provide answers, there's some heat to be taken for the pre-season hot corner rankings.

It's time to see where I went right and wrong with my fantasy rankings for third base. These rankings were made during spring training, and this particular series of pieces is meant to review those rankings so we can see what there is to learn from both the process and the results-my hope is that next season's rankings will improve through this, since I'm forced to face the music in a way.

Fantasy Beat: Third Base

45

Marc Normandin

The hot corner is one of the most loaded positions on the field, and includes options that can also play the far corner.

We continue with our fantasy positional rankings, this time moving on to the hot corner. Third base is one of the stronger positions in baseball right now, but PECOTA does not seem too enthused about many of the players. While a few are well above average, PECOTA has forecasted many of the players for merely average production, including some names that may surprise you given their upside and past performance.
