Resident Fantasy Genius: Fantasy Tier Rankings: Shortstops

11

Derek Carty

What treasures might you uncover when drafting a fantasy shortstop?

These are the shortstop fantasy rankings for 2012. Check out our previous closer, catcher, first base, second base, and third base installments.

As a reminder, five-star players are generally going to be your star-level producers that will be selected within the first couple of rounds, usually worth upward of $30. Four-star players are the next step down, worth more than $20. Three stars are worth more than $10, two stars will be in the single digits, and one star will be roster-filler and late-round fliers. Of course, this is just a general guideline. While the rankings will generally follow PECOTA, I will deviate when I feel strongly that a player will over or underperform his PECOTA projection.

Resident Fantasy Genius: Fantasy Tier Rankings: Closers

20

Derek Carty

Who should you target as a value pick to pick up some saves for the upcoming fantasy season?

Today, I’m happy to kick off our annual fantasy rankings, taking over where my predecessor Marc Normandin left off. I’ll be going position by position, organizing players into five tiers, beginning with relief pitchers.

In general, five-star players are going to be your star-level players that will be selected within the first couple of rounds, usually worth upward of $30*.

The PFM has gotten a serious overhaul. We tell you what's shiny, what's new, and why you should care.

Every spring since launching the Player Forecast Manager, we at Baseball Prospectus have tried to improve it to make it more useful for our subscribers. The PFM, for those who haven't tried it, is a tool that uses our Depth Chart projections to create player values for use in fantasy baseball drafts. It's popular among our users—enough that its use has occasionally bogged the entire site down in the past—but its potential has still not been fully realized.

Marc's CarGo cult continues, but there are plenty of four-star options available as well.

A new way to get combined outfielder rankings--and before the individual rankings have even published!

[UPDATE 2-24 5:08 EST] My starting pitcher rankings (which are publishing on the site tomorrow) were just added to the PFM.

One of the questions I see the most this time of year is some variation of, "Will we see a combined list for your outfielder rankings?" The combined list surfaces sometime after I complete the individual lists--which are written the way they are not because more leagues use left, center and right field designations, but because writing up 120-130 players worth of comments in one sitting is tedious for both the reader and the writer.
