Fantasy Beat: Expert Mock Draft Results

44

Jason Collette

Jason took part in a slow mock draft with other fantasy experts and is now here to share what he learned from the experience.

I recently had the pleasure of doing a slow—and I mean slow—mock draft over the past four weeks with a few of my friends and colleagues in the fantasy baseball industry. That group included most of the mlb.com folks, Fernando DiFino, and the legendary Joe Sheehan. The draft started on February 17 and survived a few lost weekends, DiFino’s nuptials (congrats!) and several copy and paste issues from some of us that are still using not-so-smartphones.

Fantasy Focus: My Beef With Andre

15

Marc Normandin

Fantasy players who are drafting Andre Ethier early and often should be prepared for disappointment.

Andre Ethier is a fine player, one of the more productive outfielders in the game. But that's in the real world.

The PFM has gotten a serious overhaul. We tell you what's shiny, what's new, and why you should care.

Every spring since launching the Player Forecast Manager, we at Baseball Prospectus have tried to improve it to make it more useful for our subscribers. The PFM, for those who haven't tried it, is a tool that uses our Depth Chart projections to create player values for use in fantasy baseball drafts. It's popular among our users—enough that its use has occasionally bogged the entire site down in the past—but its potential has still not been fully realized.

Fantasy Beat: Scoresheet Draft Prep, BP Kings, and You

7

Rob McQuown

Rob uses the recent direction of the BP Kings Scoresheet draft to discuss the value of outfielders and platoons.

Making one pick every day and a half is, how shall I say, not exactly rollicking fun.

Fantasy Beat: Value Picks: First Base, Third Base, DH and Outfield

Rob McQuown

Rob continues to take reader requests for intriguing corner infielders, outfielders and designated hitters.

Hot Spots hasn't gone anywhere, dear reader. Rather, it has reverted to its previous title of Value Picks, the most recent iteration of which you happen to be reading right now.

Fantasy Beat: Keeping Scoresheet

24

Rob McQuown

Rob McQuown kicks off the Scoresheet Baseball season with some basic tips and help with keeper decisions.

Welcome to the kickoff of BP Scoresheet! The “cuts” deadline for most leagues is coming up soon, and the Scoresheet forums are buzzing with titles including the words “protect” and “keeper” and “draft”. And with only 13 keepers available in most leagues, these are some tough decisions.

But first, what is Scoresheet Baseball, why is it included under “BP Fantasy”, and how can insights into Scoresheet help in other fantasy baseball contexts?

While Mike Trout gets all the attention (and understandably so), the Angels have a deep, talented system with power arms and plenty of position prospects.

Fantasy Beat: Hot Spots: Relief Pitchers

5

Mike Petriello

Which relievers came out of nowhere to provide value this season? Find out here.

Last week, in which we looked back at relievers with high expectations, was kind of a bummer. Who wants to talk about disappointments when we can talk about unexpected surprises? That's today's task, as we round out the Value Picks season by looking at bullpen arms who performed far past what we thought they would, and seeing if they're good bets to keep it up in 2011.

Fantasy Beat: Hot Spots: Outfield

0

Rob McQuown

Rob McQuown discusses some disappointments in the outfield in 2010.

If was one thing to read Michael Street's list of disappointing corner infielders Monday, but it got personal yesterday, when Mike Jong reminded this author of the two biggest disappointments on his FantasyPros911.com AL Expert League team – Matt Wieters and Aaron Hill. Not that anyone cares about anyone else's fantasy team, but it's a good reminder that fantasy owners are human too, and sometimes getting burned by one of these players will make it harder to believe that they are a rebound candidate.

Fantasy Focus: Draft Exercise

31

Craig Brown

Five players get consideration as the top choice in an AL-only Scoresheet keeper league.

I've done what feels like thousands of fantasy drafts-mock drafts, auctions, snake drafts, whatever-and I'm certain I've never, ever held the first pick. And to hold the first pick in an AL-only, 10-team, Scoresheet keeper league-in my opinion the most realistic fantasy game-well now, that's just a little daunting.

The remainder of this post cannot be viewed at this subscription level. Please click here to subscribe.

If you had the first pick of your draft this year and you took Jose Reyes over Hanley Ramirez, you probably (definitely) aren't very happy right now. But that doesn't mean it wasn't the right choice at the time. You made a choice to take a whole lot of speed with a nice splash of power thrown in over the more balanced power/speed combo. And even those descriptions, as difficult as they are to differentiate in terms of fantasy value, don't tell the whole story. We have to worry about runs, RBIs, and batting average (and those are just the typical roto stats-if your league uses sac flies as a category, you're really in trouble). While it is easy to look at two players' homerun totals and be able to tell who will provide you with more power, it is considerably more difficult to weigh five stats and know which player has more value.
