Camp Battles: AL West

25

Christina Kahrl

Not much to see here other than sorting out some corner spots and back ends of rotations.

In a wee bit of roster oddity, the AL West has both some of the most and least compelling job fights going for it. Whereas every other team in the junior circuit has a meaningful battle for a frontline job-as opposed to the inevitable, smaller combats for back-end bullpen assignments, bench roles, backup catchery, or the like, TA's bread and butter for 15 years-the short stack has one club that has no meaningful job fights, the Angels.

Despite persistent questions about three-quarters of the infield, the staff ace, and more, will this be the year we see substantial progress in the East Bay?

Player Profile: Eric Chavez

Marc Normandin

The man Billy Beane paid to anchor his franchise still has a chance of justifying the four years and $47.5 million left on his contract.

Eric Cesar Chavez was a two-time Baseball America High School All-America selection at Mount Carmel High School in San Diego, and was the only junior so honored the first time he earned it. He hit .537 with nine homeruns and 51 steals his junior year, and .458 with 11 homeruns and 33 steals his senior season, which earned him the 10th overall slot in the 1996 amateur draft. Chavez did not sign with Oakland until August 27 of that year, so his professional debut was held off until 1997, when he played third base for High-A Visalia. Chavez would only spend two seasons in the minors before debuting with the major league club, splitting 1998 between Double-A and Triple-A for the most part:

Two different approaches at the plate, and two stacked rotations. Christina has the most in-depth preview of the Athletics-Tigers series you'll find anywhere.

Okay, so it's Cinderella with some serious mojo versus the Moneyball-Meets-John Jaha Memorial Edition A's, and everyone's fascinated because it's another delightfully Yankee- and Red Sox-free American League Championship Series involving real ballclubs and stories more interesting than who gets Connecticut.

The AL West is a far cry from where it was a few months ago. The Rangers take on the Athletics in your Game of the Week.

The A's and the Rangers have spent the last month going in different directions in the standings. On July 22nd, the Rangers trailed the A's by a mere half-game in the AL West, with the Angels only two games behind the leader, and the Mariners five back in last place. On that date, the Rangers had better than even odds of making the postseason, 53.4%, according to the Playoff Odds Report. By the time they acquired left fielder Carlos Lee from the Brewers a week later, the Rangers were a game under .500, two and a half behind the A's in second place, and their chances had fallen to 29.9%. Coming into Saturday's matchup, the Rangers are in third place, and their playoff chances have dropped to negligible--right around 5%. Since a picture's worth a thousand words, here's how it all broke down:

With an eye toward October or 2006, teams fill out their rosters with veteran-y goodness or young prospects. Chris breaks it all down.

The plummeting Royals and streaking A's meet up in the rubber game of their series. With the Royals trotting out a Sunday lineup, what are the odds that the A's will blow it?

OK, the Royals weren't so hot before Saturday's game, losing 19 straight games. But after getting within sniffing distance of the AL record for consecutive losses, they blew it. As BP's resident Royals fanatic Rany Jazayerli lamented, they can't even lose right.

Lies, Damned Lies: Running down SOB

Nate Silver

The Angels work around injuries to some of their top talent, the Reds throw an organizational tantrum, and at the end of the day, there's always Jim Bowden, ready to make a move.
