Collateral Damage: Something Strasburg This Way Comes

0

Corey Dawkins and Ben Lindbergh

Stephen Strasburg nears a return to the majors, Ryan Ludwick has back spasms, Ronny Paulino bruises a big toe, Francisco Liriano's shoulder feels the strain, and Colby Rasmus adds another injury to his collection.

Ryan Ludwick, PIT (Mid back spasms) [AGL: 11 (TBD DL), ATD: +.009 (TBD DL)] (Explanation)
The Pirates have started to resemble the Giants in terms of injuries after Ludwick's placement on the disabled list with mid-back spasms. Ludwick's back first seized up on Tuesday night before calming down to some degree overnight. Wednesday morning, it locked on him again, at which time the decision was made to put him on the disabled list.

A diagnosis spasms does not really tell us that much, and it likely isn't the only thing going on. Muscle spasms can be the result of a wide range of injuries, such as herniated discs, rib fractures, arthritis in the spine, or strains of the muscles themselves. There has not been any indication that Ludwick is suffering from anything other than the spasms, but that caveat sticks in the back of our minds. If it is just the spasms, Ludwick should return near the minimum.

Collateral Damage: Fools Rush In

2

Corey Dawkins and Marc Normandin

Moylan's back is bulging, Martinez comes back too quickly, Braden proves they do suffer from shoulder stiffness in the 209, and the Cardinals take one step forward and two steps back.

We discussed yesterday why it is important not to rush back from concussions—a viewpoint that Major League Baseball agrees with, given its new disabled list policy for concussion victims—but let's not forget that patience is a virtue when it comes to even the most basic injuries. A certain off-season acquisition of the Tigers would have done well to remember that this weekend.

Peter Moylan, ATL (Low back strain/bulging disc)
Moylan recently underwent MRI testing, and a bulging disc was found in his lower back. Bulging discs, by themselves, are not that worrisome: most active people over the age of 30 have at least some degree of bulging in the discs of their lower backs and do not even know it. If the disc does not bulge to the point of compressing the spinal cord, then treatment is more focused on physical therapy and some activity modification.

Grady Sizemore returns, Barry Zito is introduced to the DL, and a quartet of backs act up.

It’s not often we get a chance to write happy news in this space, but seeing Grady Sizemore return from a layoff that seemed even longer than it actually was is one of those rare times. Sadly, one successful comeback didn't slow the torrent of new injuries, but at least nothing on today’s docket can match Sizemore’s absence in terms of recovery time and days lost.

Barry Zito, SFN (Right mid-foot sprain)
Zito suffered a mid-foot sprain on Saturday after diving to field a bunt from Joe Saunders, and he was lifted from the game shortly afterward. This marks the first time that Zito has been on the disabled list in his 12-year major league career, and it's an injury that is likely going to cost him more than 15 games. As a result, this may also be the first full season in which Zito will make fewer than 30 starts.

Collateral Damage: More on the Core

7

Corey Dawkins and Marc Normandin

Two AL shortstops go down with oblique injuries, Kevin Slowey is hurt yet again, and the Angels can't stop the bleeding.

We somehow got through the weekend without any other hitters requiring an appendectomy. However, the other type of injury that has hit the headlines again and again in the early going—having claimed Evan Longoria, Corey Hart, Brian Matusz, Brian Wilson, and others already in 2011—returned in full force, so we'll start there.

J.J. Hardy, BAL (Strained left oblique)

Team Injury Projection: Oakland Athletics

0

Corey Dawkins and Marc Normandin

Does Billy Beane's sh*t work in the trainer's room?

Team Injury Projections

The Team Injury Projections are here, driven by our brand new injury forecasting system, the Comprehensive Health Index [of] Pitchers [and] Players [with] Evaluative Results—or, more succinctly, CHIPPER. Thanks to work by Colin Wyers and Dan Turkenkopf and a database loaded with injuries dating back to the 2002 season—that's nearly 4,600 players and well over 400,000 days lost to injury—we now have a system that produces injury-risk assessments to three different degrees. CHIPPER projects ratings for players based on their injury history—these ratings measure the probability of a player missing one or more games, 15 or more games, or 30 or more games. CHIPPER will have additional features added to it throughout the spring and early season that will enhance the accuracy of our injury coverage.

These ratings are also available in the Player Forecast Manager (pfm.baseballprospectus.com), where they'll be sortable by league or position—you won’t have to wait for us to finish writing this series in order to see the health ratings for all of the players.

Collateral Damage: Show and Patella

12

Corey Dawkins and Marc Normandin

Chase Utley's knee shows some improvement but remains in need of further healing, and as spring training winds down, pitchers and catchers contort.

With the exhibition season drawing to a close, the optimism surrounding many a player's return is dwindling. Despite all the talk about hope springing eternal, injuries have cropped up from the outset, and some players will need to begin the season on the disabled list.

Chase Utley, PHI (Right knee tendinitis)
