The Dodgers finally select a manager, and it's not the choice that felt inevitable a few weeks ago.

The Mets finished off the Dodgers with a combination of sustained velocity and Daniel Murphy magic.

It's the hair versus the brain for a date with the Cubs.

Game 5. deGrom. Greinke. This pretty much sells itself. But if that doesn't do it for you, perhaps Yoenis Cespedes may fire back in his Magic/Bird batflip toss competition with Jose Bautista.

The playoffs, and a new villain, return to Queens and the Mets greet both with an offensive outburst.

The last home playoff game the New York Mets played ended with a curveball, and 56,000 morose fans streaming out of Shea Stadium. Nine years later they didn't even have to wait for their team's blowout 13-7 win for a bit of catharsis. It came as soon as public address announcer Alex Anthony began to introduce the Los Angeles Dodgers. Loud boos rained down from all corners of Citi Field. The training staff, up first, got the first wave of the gathering storm. The boos continued to rain down through all the Dodgers bench players, most of whom seemed amused. Zack Greinke even gave a little wave. Then came Chase Utley, and, well...

Playoff Prospectus: PECOTA Odds and NLDS Game 4 Previews

Rian Watt and Chris Mosch

The Dodgers and Cardinals fight for their playoff lives on the road.

After a Game Three in which the Cubs hit six home runs---beating the Cardinals 8-6, and setting a major-league record for home runs in a postseason game in the process---they’ll be right back at it this afternoon as they try to punch their ticket to the NLCS for the first time since 2003.

Come for your Jake Arrieta fix, stay for the emerging drama between the Dodgers and Mets.

With the series knotted at one, the Cubs bring their ace to the mound as the Cardinals counter with an arm who’s struggled against the North Siders’ lineup of late.

Playoff Prospectus: Two Baseball Plays: NLDS Game 2

11

Jeffrey Paternostro

On one ground ball, the Mets and Dodgers went from playing a great series to an unforgettable one.

Here is a list of topics I would rather be using as a lead for this recap:

Kyle Hendricks and Zack Greinke try to even the series.

Jon Lester was solid for the Cubs but John Lackey was masterful, not allowing a hit until the sixth inning and giving the Cardinals 7 1/3 strong before giving way to the bullpen. Tommy Pham and Stephen Piscotty continued the Cardinals never-ending tradition of finding new postseason heroes with their home runs in the eighth inning, and St. Louis took Game One, 4-0. The Cubs will try to salvage a split in St. Louis before the series moves to Wrigley Field on Monday.

The Call-Up: Corey Seager

3

Christopher Crawford and Mike Gianella

We haven't seen a younger sibling steal his big brother's thunder like this since Renly Baratheon.

The situation: The Dodgers scuffled slightly in mid-August, but after sweeping the Giants this week Los Angeles has settled into a comfortable lead in the NL West. To help stabilize their third-base situation (Justin Turner got hit in the hand on Wednesday night), the Dodgers will call up the top prospect in baseball for the final month in Corey Seager.

Background: The younger brother of Mariners All-Star third baseman Kyle Seager; Corey was a prep standout out of Northwest Carbarrus High School in South Carolina; and it was no surprise when the Dodger selected him with the 18th-overall pick of the 2012 draft. After two solid seasons at the lower levels, Seager’s stock really took off following his sensational 2014 campaign, where he posted a 1.004 OPS at High-A Rancho Cucamonga and continued to rake in Double-A Chattanooga. He’s continued to put up impressive numbers this year, and after hitting .375/.407/.675 at Double-A Tulsa, he earned a call to Triple-A Oklahoma City, and was ranked No. 1 in the Baseball Prospectus mid-season top 50 this July.

The career Phillies' star heads back home to SoCal, the Padres finally deal an outfielder (not that one), and more..
