Checking the Numbers: Swinging Role Reversals

5

Eric Seidman

Sorting out the odder types among pitchers asked to start and relieve.

Last week, we took a look at swingmen, those pitchers that spend a decent amount of time in both the rotation and bullpen during the same season, doing so as a means of gauging the true expected performance differential when a pitcher shifts roles in either direction. The number of pitchers of this ilk have declined over the last few decades, but they still surface from time to time for one reason or another. Some are young prospects who, when called up, are instantly installed in the pen, to develop confidence, to get exposure, just help out in middle relief, or a combination of the three. At other times, putting young starters in the pen aids the team's efforts to limit their workloads. In certain situations, the ability to serve as both a specialist and emergency starter provides some additional utility to teams, as they don't need to sign Josh Towers to take a start, or dip into the farm system in the event of a doubleheader or an injury.

On the Beat: Midweek Update

17

John Perrotto

The Dodgers reassert their authority out west, a Cardinals kerfuffle, Kazmir's up for monkeying around, plus news and views from around the game.

The Dodgers heard the footsteps and decided not to take any chances with possibly losing their grip on a National League West title that it had seemingly put a stranglehold on four months ago. Moving swiftly, general manager Ned Colletti decisively and stealthily bolstered his team's chances of not only winning its second consecutive division title but its first NL pennant since 1988 as the clock wound down on the August 31 deadline for acquiring players who would be eligible for the post-season roster.

Is this year's hot start by St. Louis a repeat of what we saw last year, or are the Cardinals in a better place this time around?

The Cardinals have exceeded expectations with a 17-8 start that includes a +36 run differential, tied for the second-best mark in MLB with the Blue Jays. The underlying performance in those numbers is good as well: the Cards are second in the NL in OBP, third in SLG, and second in runs scored. They're tied for fifth in runs allowed, with a 2:1 K/BB ratio and the second-fewest home runs allowed in the league.

Thursday night was Christina's turn at the keyboard, as the series of Series diaries continues.

8:00 PM: It's the pre-game show, and... do we have a game or no? Me, I wonder if all this Taco Bell talk didn't inspire my decision to cook buffalo-meat tacos-as a former Taco Bell employee, you won't catch me dead in one of the thousands of Casa de Greasepits you'll find hawking its loathsome refried wares on a streetcorner near you.

Playoff Prospectus: Padres versus Cardinals

0

Dan Fox

Dan reviews the no-longer funny Padres and their bid to take down the somewhat more embarrassed Cardinals in a rematch from last season's playoffs.

Okay, so things aren't anywhere near that bleak. In fact, the rematch of these two division winners beginning Tuesday afternoon at PETCO Park should be much more compelling than the 2005 version, in which the 82-win Padres impersonated a playoff team on their way to a three-game thrashing at the hands of the 100-win Cardinals. The fact that these are two teams going in opposite directions of 2005 also adds to the fun.
