Blue Jays Change Closers Again

Shortly after we spoke last week, the Blue Jays yanked rookie Miguel Castro from the closer role and handed it back to Brett Cecil. Castro has been extremely inconsistent this year, flashing dominant stuff at times and looking like the 20-year-old he is at other times. Things got even worse for the youngster over the weekend as he was optioned back to Triple-A. Toronto sure is yanking around their young arm, moving him in and out of the closer role at random and now moving him off the roster entirely. Barring injury, he’ll certainly be back in the majors at some point and it wouldn’t surprise me if it came soon. As for Cecil, he’s clearly a must-own as the closer on a talented roster. He’s still striking out opponents at a nice rate, but the hard contact has been discouraging. Since he’s better than his competition, I would like to say his job should be safe for now, but the Blue Jays have been too quick with their decisions in this bullpen to be overly confident in them staying with the status quo for any period of time.

Jenrry Mejia Suspended 80 Games
Continuing the trend of MLB players getting suspended for the throwback steroid Stanozolol, Mejia tested positive last week. He was already on the 15-day disabled list, which I wrote about last week, but this obviously pushes him back even further. It adds a little protection to Jeurys Familia’s job, but not much. As I said last week, Bobby Parnell is gearing up to start his rehab assignment, and should be back on the roster in a couple of weeks. Familia has almost certainly been picked up in your leagues by now, but if Parnell is still available and you can afford to stash him, he could pay off relatively soon.

Toronto Shakes Up Their Bullpen
Well, I’ve had my first way-off prediction of the year. When the Blue Jays named Brett Cecil their closer, I confidently stated he would hold on to the job for the majority of the year. So much for that. This past week, John Gibbons took Cecil out of the role and handed the job to 20-year-old Miguel Castro. He hadn’t pitched above High-A coming into this season, but he’s looked good in the early going this year. Gibbons did indicate that part of the reason for the move was to get Cecil back on track with his mechanics. That, combined with Castro’s inexperience, could mean another move could be made relatively quickly, so don’t go dropping Cecil just yet in deep leagues.

The Craig Kimbrel Trade

Clearly, the biggest piece of news over the last week was Sunday’s blockbuster sending noted elite closer Craig Kimbrel to the Padres. I would like to take this time to send my sincere condolences to those who spent significant resources on Joaquin Benoit, who is now relegated to setup duties. Even deeper condolences go to Kevin Quackenbush owners, as he went from intriguing handcuff sleeper to being sent to triple-A to start the year.

Fantasy Staff Predictions

BP Fantasy Staff

The gang makes its picks for the top fantasy rookie, the first closer to lose his job, and much more.

It’s been a long off-season. We’ve done projects and rankings and team posts and strategy sessions and you’ve stuck around for the whole thing. As a team, we are ever grateful of your patronage. The regular season starts Sunday night, and since a larger percentage of drafts are over, it’s time to have a little fun.

In the tradition of shorter introductions (and earlier bedtimes), I submitted the following 10 questions to our crack fantasy staff, and here are the answers that hit my inbox:

Surveying the ninth-inning situations around the league heading into Opening Day.

Ah, relievers. The position everyone loves to hate. Keeping tabs on closers can be one of the most frustrating parts of a fantasy baseball season, as situations change seemingly everyday. We’re going to try to help you through that this year, keeping you up to date on who will be grabbing saves around the league. For the first week, I’ll list all the relievers lined up to get the save opportunities to start the year, adding more details underneath where they’re merited. Later weeks will focus solely on those situations that have changed or could change soon.

Tale of the Tape, Dynasty Edition: Nick Burdi vs. Derek Law

6

J.P. Breen

Two right-handed flamethrowers square off, but does the Twin or the Giant have the edge?

At times, we all participate in something that causes us to (1) realize that life has no greater purpose, and (2) accept that our tolerance for pain is much greater than we previously ever imagined. Welcome to the Tale of the Tape, Dynasty Edition, for relievers. We’re placing Nick Burdi alongside Derek Law and trying to determine a winner.

Spoiler Alert: There are no winners in life. We’re all relief prospects at heart—people who flash sporadic greatness, but lack either the luck or the consistency to make it big. A precious few reach their full potential, teasing us with a glimpse of the promised land. The delusion is thinking that the closer’s role is the promised land, though, isn’t it?

Dynasty League Positional Rankings: Top 50 Relief Pitchers

20

Bret Sayre

Sizing up the bullpen arms for the long haul.

The Primer:

Because dynasty league rankings are relatively league-dependent, I set up parameters for ranking the players below (and the ones who will follow at other positions). The list here presupposes a 16-team standard dynasty format, where there are no contracts/salaries, players can be kept forever and owners have minor league farm systems in which to hoard prospects. So feel free to adjust this as necessary for your individual league, whether it’s moving non-elite prospects without 2014 ETAs down if you don’t have separate farm teams or moving lower-risk, lower-reward players up in deeper mixed or -only formats.
