The Cubs clinch a playoff series at home for the first time in franchise history.

The plan all along was for this Cubs team to be built on offense. After clinching a trip to the club’s first NLCS in a dozen years, team president Theo Epstein discussed how he and his staff once envisioned these bats all coming together and leading this group to great places.

The Cubs power their way through a pivotal game against the Cardinals.

Game Three of the NLDS between the Cardinals and the Cubs shifted to Wrigley Field on Monday night, with the advantage tilting to the Cubs not only because they split the first two games of the series in St. Louis but because their ace was taking the hill. While Michael Wacha certainly isn’t any kind of slouch, it would be difficult to argue that the Cubs didn’t have a significant edge with the white hot Jake Arrieta on the mound.

The Dodgers and Cardinals fight for their playoff lives on the road.

After a Game Three in which the Cubs hit six home runs---beating the Cardinals 8-6, and setting a major-league record for home runs in a postseason game in the process---they’ll be right back at it this afternoon as they try to punch their ticket to the NLCS for the first time since 2003.

Playoff Prospectus: The Cubs Do Simple Better: NLDS Game 2

2

Rian Watt

The Northsiders used everything in their arsenal to even the series at one.

It was 54 degrees on October 3rd in Milwaukee, and the Cubs were bunched around the batting cages, working on their bunting. Manager Joe Maddon, who spent years as a nuts-and-bolts minor-league instructor, and whose mantra this year has been “Do Simple Better” was convinced that his players would need to come up big in a bunt situation come playoff time, and wanted to drive home that message on the penultimate day of the regular season. Maddon’s decision took just a week to pay off. The Cubs did simple better Saturday night in St. Louis, beating the Cardinals 6-3 in their own ballpark and taking the series back to Chicago knotted at one.

Kyle Hendricks and Zack Greinke try to even the series.

Jon Lester was solid for the Cubs but John Lackey was masterful, not allowing a hit until the sixth inning and giving the Cardinals 7 1/3 strong before giving way to the bullpen. Tommy Pham and Stephen Piscotty continued the Cardinals never-ending tradition of finding new postseason heroes with their home runs in the eighth inning, and St. Louis took Game One, 4-0. The Cubs will try to salvage a split in St. Louis before the series moves to Wrigley Field on Monday.
