Resident Fantasy Genius: CBS Experts League Draft Results

13

Derek Carty

With less than 36 hours to prepare, how did our fantasy guru do on draft day?

Last Wednesday night, I received a Facebook message from Mike Gianella, a good friend of mine in the industry who runs the Roto Think Tank blog. He said that the CBS Experts League was in need of one more participant, and he suggested me to fill the spot. Little did I know, the league would be drafting less than 36 hours later, making for some shotgun preparations.

Despite having to prepare with haste, I think I wound up with a pretty good team. There’s some risk, sure, but in a league of this depth, I did pretty well for myself. The league setup is 12 teams, AL-only, 5x5 with traditional 23-man rosters and seven (!) bench spots. Here’s how my roster turned out:

Value Picks: Outfield for 8/17/11

10

Rob McQuown

Indicators conflict about new VP-arrival J.D. Martinez, and Rob discusses the shake-ups in many major league outfields.

Rebounding from a rough week, the six Value Pick Outfielders hit a combined .299/.358/.557 this past week, led by Eric Thames at .389/.450/.944, and just-removed Nolan Reimold reminded fantasy owners why he was a Value Pick in the first place, hitting .286/.348/.571 for the week. Meanwhile, outfields all around the majors have been shaken up this week. Delmon Young switched allegiances in the AL Central, changing lineups in Detroit and Minnesota. Logan Morrison will be Tweeting from the minors, and two-thirds of the Giants starting outfield (Andres Torres and Carlos Beltran) head to the disabled list, as does Rajai Davis of the Blue Jays. Shin-Soo Choo and Jose Tabata returned to action, and former Value Picks Wily Mo Pena, Brandon Allen, and Brandon Belt all seem to be in line for more playing time. All these changes have created opportunities for shrewd fantasy owners.

Fantasy Focus: NL-only Draft Results

16

Marc Normandin

What can we learn from Marc's second-year draft in CBS Fantasy Sports' NL experts league?

Yes, yes, I know: no one cares about my fantasy team. But since this is an NL-only experts league I participate in over at CBS Sports as a representative of Baseball Prospectus, it seems fitting that you get to read about it. Scott White, Al Melchior, Derek VanRiper, Erik Siegrist, and many others are in this 12-team league (the full auction results of which can be found here). In a nutshell, I’m pleased with how my team turned out in my second year in the league, but there are a few picks I made where I wish I had listened more to my own advice.
