Prospectus Today: All-Star Screw-Ups

0

Joe Sheehan

The disjointed selection process has produced odd assemblages on each league's roster, and overlooked some true stars.

The All-Star rosters were announced Sunday, accompanied by the usual wailing and gnashing of teeth. I'm as big a complainer about the picks as anyone, even though I know it's a controversy that lasts about half of a news cycle. No one will care, by Wednesday, that Jason Bay or Johan Santana or John Lackey got jobbed.

Schrodinger's Bat: The Baserunning Edition

0

Dan Fox

Dan runs down the 2007 leaderboards in baserunning metrics, and crowns a player who helped his team the most on the basepaths.

"Never trust a baserunner who's limping. Comes a base hit, and you'll think he just got back from Lourdes."
--Joe Garagiola

Prospectus Q&A: Jim Duquette, Orioles VP of Baseball Operations

0

Maury Brown

Maury Brown chats with Baltimore executive Jim Duquette about the inflated off-season market, how the Orioles have addressed their problems in the bullpen and left field, and a good deal more.

There are signs that the Orioles may be on track to improving the team. The question is, will that improvement be enough when compared with the moves that the rest of the AL East has made? While the Orioles were in the mix for a number of key free agents this off-season, they abandoned their approach of going hard after those free agents when the market set higher than in the recent past. When the off-season started, Duquette said the Orioles "went down two different, but parallel paths" in which they planned on trying to acquire key free agents, but had a backup plan in case the market saw elevated free spending. At that point, addressing the bullpen became a key focus, along with acquiring a solid middle-of-the-lineup bat.

Playoff Prospectus: Padres versus Cardinals

0

Dan Fox

Dan reviews the no-longer funny Padres and their bid to take down the somewhat more embarrassed Cardinals in a rematch from last season's playoffs.

Okay, so things aren't anywhere near that bleak. In fact, the rematch of these two division winners beginning Tuesday afternoon at PETCO Park should be much more compelling than the 2005 version, in which the 82-win Padres impersonated a playoff team on their way to a three-game thrashing at the hands of the 100-win Cardinals. The fact that these are two teams going in opposite directions of 2005 also adds to the fun.

Player Profile

0

Marc Normandin

Was Brian Roberts' 2005 a breakout season, or another Age-27 data point? Marc takes a look.

Roberts was drafted 50th overall by the Orioles in 1999; he was a sandwich pick between the first and second rounds, received as compensation for Cleveland's signing of Roberto Alomar. His college career was highly regarded, as Baseball America rated him the top defensive college player, and he was second team All-American in his final season at the University of South Carolina after hitting .353 with 12 home runs and a NCAA-leading 67 stolen bases. Roberts finished his college career ranked fifth all-time for steals.

Roberts started out as a shortstop in Single-A Delmarva, and posted a poor batting line: .240/.345/.323 was disappointing, but he did walk in 13.9 percent of all plate appearances, and managed to steal bases at a 77 percent success rate. The walks and steals added up to a .317 Secondary Average, but with an Isolated Power of only .083. His 2000 season at High-A Frederick would provide a more aesthetically pleasing batting line of .301/.403/.374, but his success rate stealing bases suffered--only 13 of 23, or 57 percent--and his power was still nonexistent.

Joe has seen some terrible uses of the sacrifice bunt so far this season.

Under the new method, the Hall of Fame vs. Jimmy looks like this:
