Looking at the second sackers on this year's Hall of Fame ballot.
At least around these parts, the 2010 Hall of Fame ballot
voting results were more notable for the two near-miss candidates than for the one who made it. While gained entry to Cooperstown back in January, Andre Dawson and Bert Blyleven fell just a handful of votes short, the former by four in his 13th ballot appearance, the latter by eight in his ballot debut. In fact, Alomar received the highest percentage of the vote for any first-year candidate who wasn't elected. Today we'll spotlight Alomar and his fellow second basemen on the ballot using Roberto Alomar to evaluate their candidacies. JAWS
We take a look at a few recent DFAs in Seattle and Boston, and check up on the first-place Nationals.
Having taught at two universities, I can recognize lousy excuses when I see them. Here's mine. I cut the paragraph mentioning Ambres for two reasons: one, it was boring, and two, Ambres wasn't a serious option three months ago, and ~250 good ABs doesn't really change that, International League All-Star status or not. Of course, the fact that Ambres is even in the discussion at all supported the earlier point in last Friday's piece, which is that the Sox had no outfield depth this offseason; that the seemingly best major-league-ready option in Triple-A at the moment was
picked up as a minor league free agent speaks volumes about the system as it existed this winter.

The Tribe isn't hitting, the Mariners pitchers are lucky, and Nick Johnson is mashing. All this and more in today's Prospectus Triple Play.

Certainty changes everything. Baseball's exciting, if for no other reason, because the Devil Rays--an abjectly bad franchise--can beat the Yankees every couple of times they meet. Unlike in football, the outcome of a single contest between a defending champion and a perennial cellar-dweller is relatively uncertain, thus every game has the ability to provide a legitimate sense of drama. It's the lack of certainty that makes it the greatest sport in the world.

Unlike in football, the outcome of a single contest between a defending champion and a perennial cellar-dweller is relatively uncertain, thus every game has the ability to provide a legitimate sense of drama. It's the lack of certainty that makes it the greatest sport in the world. On that note, however, watching the A's rack up wins as the Mariners continue to struggle has begun to make me numb. Every game, the A's are victorious. They're not playing out of their minds--or like they're in another league--they're just winning every single game they play, and it's scary. Intellectually I know that there's luck, chance, and the simple fact that teams go on tears once in a while, but in my gut I know that the A's are going to win tonight, simply because they're taking the field.

That title belongs to
Roberto Alomar. Alomar, who hit two home runs
last night, has outplayed Boone by a not-insignificant margin this season:
