Prospectus Roundtable: Top 50 Prospects, Part IV
by
Baseball Prospectus

<< Previous Tag Entries Next Tag Entries >>

There's a rising favorite in the AL Central, as our experts weigh in on everything from division winners to Matsuzaka's line.

Our annual predictions arrive this year as our Hope and Faith series comes to an end. While the beauty of spring training is that every team can think it has a chance, somebody has to take the losses. For today, we concentrate on the division standings and the major player awards (MVP, Cy Young, and Rookie of the Year) in the American League. Tomorrow we'll conclude with the National League predictions, along with the staff picks for the World Series.

Each author's division standings predictions may be found later in the article. Here, we present a wisdom-of-the-crowds summary of the results. In each table you'll find the average rank of each team in their division, plus the results of our preseason MVP, Cy Young and Rookie of the Year voting. A slight shift at the bottom of the AL East rankings, a rising favorite in the AL Central, and anarchy in the AL West highlight our staff's guesses.

A rematch of the World Champs and the NL pennant winners is what Derek's clicker dials up this time around.

It's been a busy week for both ballclubs. The Astros had the season debut of seven-time Cy Young Award winner Roger Clemens on Thursday, making the decision to have Clemens go against the Minnesota Twins at home, rather than pitch against the White Sox in Chicago. Clemens was hardly dominant in a game where young phenom Francisco Liriano emerged victorious.

Future Shock: Pre-Draft Pandemonium

0

Kevin Goldstein

The draft is now mere hours away, and Kevin gives us all the last-minute news.

I had an interesting afternoon yesterday, getting away from the phone long enough to put on the suit and talk about today's draft with the fine folks on ESPNews' Hot List. During my 12 minute segment I spoke briefly about many of the top players in this year's class, and speculated as to where they might go when the draft gets underway at 1 ET.

The New York teams sandwich the Tigers at the top of this week's rankings, and Kansas City's got some AL Central company down at the bottom.

Future Shock: 2006 Draft Notebook, 5/4/06

Kevin has an update on this year's amateur draft.

  • 1. Kansas City: Word on the street is that the Royals will not take North Carolina lefthander Andrew Miller; it looks like a 50/50 proposition that Kansas City will go cheap instead. The good news is that if they do balk on paying Miller the expected asking price of a major league deal with a total value in the $6+ million range, we now have a good idea of who their backup choice is: Washington righty Tim Lincecum. However, while admitting that he's not familiar with the economic factors surrounding the Royals decision, one scouting director thinks that the drop-off in talent between Miller and any other player is too significant for the Royals to pass up. "You look at those at other pitchers, and then you look at Miller and he's a 6-foot-7 lefty with tremendous arm strength," said the scouting director. "He's a completely different animal and if there's any way you could pull it [drafting Miller] off, you'd have to."

We're not even out of April, and a team's already gone to a 13-man pitching staff. Plus, the Nationals correct some wrongs, and former prospects resurface.

Future Shock: Your Wednesday Draft Update

    0

    Kevin Goldstein

Kevin looks once more at the 2006 Amateur Draft, with updates on what the selecting teams may be up to.

With the 2006 draft countdown now under the two month mark, things remain highly unresolved, though some separation among the top players has begun to take hold. Instead of focusing on players, let's instead take a look at what some of the teams are talking about when it comes to overall draft strategy and possible trends come June.

Teams continue to clean house, scattering Quad-A players in all directions in preparation for the stretch run of Spring Training.
