On the Beat: The Braves' New World

8

John Perrotto

Atlanta again looks to its pitching staff, Pedro and other free agents are trawling for contracts at the WBC, plus other news from around the major leagues.

It would be understandable if the Braves had reported to spring training with an inferiority complex. They'd suffered more rejection over the winter than the ugliest guy in the senior class looking for a prom date.

Every Given Sunday: Settling into the Stretch

0

John Perrotto

If you could sit down and watch a bit of every playoff race, where would you go? John's the man with a plan. Plus records, rumors, and more.

Jim Leyland has always insisted that the pennant races don't begin until August 15th. While Leyland has never given a definitive reason for why he has arbitrarily picked that date, the Tigers' manager understands pennant races, having lead Pittsburgh to three straight division titles from 1990-92 back when the Pirates still mattered, guided the Florida Marlins to the World Series title in 1997, and taken the Tigers to the World Series last year.

Everything you ever wanted to know about the lost art of pinch running, past, present, and future.

With the help of Mat Kovach and Retrosheet, pinch running statistics in the last 50 years have now been compiled, along with leaderboards for seasons, lifetime, and most times removed, along with team and manager statistics. (E-mail me if you want this.) In compiling all this information, a few things jump out from the statistics, and so here are the highlights of pinch running statistics.

Schrodinger's Bat: The Price of Contentment

0

Dan Fox

Dan looks at double steals from every conceivable angle, inspired by a wacky quadruple steal from the pages of Retrosheet.

"He told me the rule book doesn't specifically cover that situation. He said you've seen one of the most unusual plays in baseball."
--Official scorer Randy Minkoff, recounting his conversation with Seymour Siwoff about the Cardinals "quadruple steal" in August of 1985, as recorded by Retrosheet

Prospectus Today: Inches

0

Joe Sheehan

The difference between going home and going on is so very, very small.

There were the three inches that were the difference between a Brad Ausmus home run and and a game-ending fly ball. Then there were the six inches between where Andruw Jones' 11th inning line drive landed and the left-field foul line. Think about the two inches between Julio Franco's foot and the first-base bag, inches that were the difference between safe and out in an inning where it all began to go wrong.

Playoff Prospectus: Atlanta Braves vs. Houston Astros

0

Joe Sheehan

Baseball like it used to be--in 1968--is the likely order of the day in this matchup between a great starting rotation and a good one.

This series should be a beat writer's dream, with fast-paced, low-scoring games that end in plenty of time to file a story and get a good meal. There were just 1,302 runs scored in Astros' games this season, the lowest figure in baseball. That's because in addition to having great starting pitching, they can't hit. The Braves will do their part to keep things moving by running three good right-handed starters at the Astros, attacking their weak, righty-heavy lineup with tough righties who keep the ball down.

Playoff Prospectus: Atlanta Braves vs. Houston Astros

0

Nate Silver

These teams meet in the first round for the fourth time in eight years. Will this matchup turn out any differently than the first three did?

None of this is meant to slight the Braves, who pull off the amazing feat of being consistently awesome and consistently underrated, but this is Houston's series to lose.

Doctoring The Numbers: Doctoring the Numbers: Sweet Relief

0

Rany Jazayerli

Nothing spoils us like greatness. It is so easy to take for granted the magnificence of once-in-a-lifetime talents like Barry Bonds or Alex Rodriguez, precisely because their greatness produces a consistency that lulls us into becoming accustomed to their exploits. Greatness isn't a quality reserved for those who take the field. The most dominant baseball figure of the past 25 years hasn't played in the major leagues since 1969. It has been 12 years since the playoffs started without a team managed by Bobby Cox, and he appears to be in no hurry to end that streak.
