The Buyer's Guide: Bradley Zimmer

0

Eric Roseberry

Zimmer has been getting on base and running for the Indians, and fantasy owners are starting to notice.

Bradley Zimmer was called up by the Cleveland Indians in May to help solidify their outfield. He was one of the top prospects in Cleveland’s system. Baseball Prospectus had him ranked as the Indians third-best prospect this season. Zimmer brought impressive speed to Cleveland, but also concerns about his ability to handle major-league pitching. These worries made fantasy owners timid to heavily invest in Zimmer early in the year.

TDGX Transactions: Week 16

Ask me about Jose Siri!

The Dynasty Guru Experts League is a 20-team (40-man roster) 5x5 rotisserie dynasty league founded by BP managing editor Bret Sayre in 2014. It is intended to satisfy the deep-league needs of all, down to just the right amount of Alexi Amarista. We roster 23 starters (C/1B/2B/3B/SS/MI/CI, along with two additional utility hitters, five outfielders and nine pitchers). We also roster seven bench slots and have 10 spots designated for minor leaguers, although a quick scan of the league finds that most teams utilize a majority of their bench spots for additional prospects. That means that there are an additional 100-120 prospects that are rostered above the 200 spots reserved for them.

These write-ups are intended to pair nicely with Mike Gianella’s Expert FAAB Review, as we will look at each week’s TDGX free-agent acquisitions, as well as include thoughts on every major trade that occurs during the season. The yearly budget for free-agent transactions is $100, with $0 bids allowed for major leaguers and prospects.

The Buyer's Guide: Gerardo Parra

2

Eric Roseberry

Parra is hotter than Georgia asphalt (only in Colorado) right now. But how long will it last, and what will he offer the fantasy player from here to October?

Over the course of his nine-year career, Gerardo Parra hasn’t really been a hot commodity for fantasy purposes. He was unable to provide at least league-average production in six of his eight previous seasons. Before this year, there were questions whether Parra would be able to find regular playing time given the shape of Colorado’s roster.

Jose Quintana moving from the AL to the NL is the rare case when players in an -only league discover "found money" in FAAB free agency. Those who saved can prosper. All-too-frequently however, it can be shrewder to use FAAB money earlier, incrementally, because "big-fish" free agents simply never come.

The Buyer's Guide: Orlando Arcia

4

Eric Roseberry

Does a recently high batting average bode well for Arcia's immediate fantasy future?

Orlando Arcia made his major-league debut in 2016. Initially, his fantasy value was thought to be limited because his defense was his most valuable asset. Over the course of those 55 games, Arcia hit .219/.273/.358 with four home runs, 21 runs scored, 17 RBIs and eight stolen bases. His fantasy stock wasn’t high coming into 2017. Arcia did rate as a two-star player in Mike Gianella’s initial shortstop rankings, but Mike admitted this was “a speculative pick based on stats from a year ago.”

The Buyer's Guide: Michael A. Taylor

2

Eric Roseberry

He's running with an opportunity to play—but how long can Taylor keep up this kind of production?

Michael Taylor entered the season with limited fantasy value. The addition of Adam Eaton made Taylor the odd-man out in Washington’s outfield. However, injuries to several players (Eaton and Jayson Werth) have made playing time available. The 26-year-old is running with the opportunity, and he started to draw serious interest from fantasy owners.

Taylor saw the biggest change in ownership rate at CBS (19 percent to 48 percent) over the past week. Similarly, he saw the largest increase at ESPN (4.5 percent to 39.3 percent). In Yahoo’s latest “Transaction Trends,” Taylor was a top-10 addition in the outfield. He’s currently a top-50 outfielder by ESPN’s player rater, and he’s been providing owners with positive values in every standard fantasy category.

TDGX Transactions: Week 12

2

J.J. Jansons

Let's start to get caught up.

After the minor life events (wedding, honeymoon, etc.) that have taken place in my life over the past few weeks, the TDGX Transactions column is back after a brief hiatus!

OK, OK, some would say “lengthy” hiatus, and apparently I missed quite a bit in the baseball universe because now I’m left to contemplate lineups in one similarly-sized league that could feature Yonder Alonso at first, Anthony Rizzo at second and Freddie Freeman at third—just like I thought was going to be in play headed into the season, right?
